I am currently teaching Psychology at a local Houston college and, for 4 or 5 years, taught a class in Mass Communications at the University of North Carolina (Arts & Ideas). I have also been a Psychotherapist in private practice for 25 years, and I feel very comfortable tutoring sociology, philosophy, communication, etc. (Even if those abstract subjects may not be where you need tutoring, I can always help you unravel learning blocks ... that take the form of procrastination, not investing in learning 100%, an inability to retain information, etc. We all come up with some creative reasons to underachieve).

When I got out of undergraduate school in Boulder, I spent 7 years working for KGO-TV, ABC Affiliate, where I worked on-camera all over the country and would feel very comfortable tutoring speech-writing and public speaking.

Psychology

I am a licensed psychotherapist who has been in private practice for 20 years. I also just finished teaching Psychology at a local college.

ACT Reading

ACT reading is all about developing an ability to stay focused and think while reading -- demonstrating that the test-takers can remember what they just read and rapidly formulate their "position" or assessment of what they just read. The SAT Reading test is an opportunity to show off the test-takers' creativity and ability to stay "grounded" all the while.

Study Skills

In my "Subject Competence" description, I mentioned that I have been a licensed psychotherapist and worked with hundreds of people who have "resistance" to acquiring good study skills. I am quite confident that good study skills are easily acquired if the student is not only encouraged, but gets to examine all of the "payoffs" for NOT having successful study skills.

Public Speaking

I worked as a live television reporter under the scrutiny of 250,000 viewers for five years.

Sociology

Many people consider Sociology as a "cousin" to Psychology. In fact, I minored in Sociology at the University of Colorado. I have taken many courses in Sociology, with a focus on what's happening with the "Tech Revolution" and popular culture at large. I read everything I can and keep up with Sociological issues (how 'bout that last fight for the presidency). While each Sociology class is different, I feel competent to tutor in my second passion, Sociology.

Film

I wrote movie reviews for papers all over the SW, and taught Film Criticism at the University of North Carolina for five years. That job led to teaching Arts & Ideas at UNC. I consider myself to be an expert film critic.
