I am currently teaching Psychology at a local Houston college and, for 4 or 5 years, taught a class in Mass Communications at a state university. I have also been a Psychotherapist in private practice for 25 years, and I feel very comfortable tutoring sociology, philosophy, study skills, reading, writing, philosophy, public speaking and helping students to increase communication skills, etc. (Even if those abstract subjects may not be where you need tutoring, I can always help you unravel learning blocks that take the form of procrastination, not investing in learning 100%, an inability to retain information, etc. We all come up with some creative reasons to underachieve).

When I got out of undergraduate school in Boulder, I spent 7 years working for KGO-TV, ABC Affiliate, where I worked on-camera all over the country and feel very comfortable tutoring speech-writing and public speaking. I also work with children/adults who struggle with anxiety-related learning retention affecting self-esteem and academic relationships.

ACT Reading

ACT reading is all about developing an ability to stay focused and think while reading -- demonstrating that the test-takers can remember what they just read and rapidly formulate their "position" or assessment of what they just read. The SAT Reading test is an opportunity to show off the test-takers' creativity and ability to stay "grounded" all the while.

Throughout my 25-year career as a psychotherapist, there has always been a psychological disease "du jour." ADD and Adult ADD have been "it" for the last 10 years or so. Occasionally hyperactivity is involved, but the experts are not sure if after the age of 7 or 8, the hyperactivity is actually "organic" to the condition so much anymore. But that's not important to me as a tutor. Regardless, if you as a child, adolescent or adult fighting to focus, follow through or even learn and retain -- whether it's ADD or PTSD or just free-floating anxiety -- over the long run the client is going to feel "less than" his peers and colleagues. Trying to make good grades, go to college and manage a high-powered position is difficult enough without the "secret or stigma" of ADD. Add to it that the medical field believes your brain chemistry to be faulty can be devastating.
Additionally,in most cases, medication does have a positive influence for individuals so diagnosed. Honestly, when I go out for WyzAnt to help an adolescent with study skills, 90% of those calls for help are for young people diagnosed with ADD and on medication. My strengths here are in helping the young person put together a system that works for them, while also assisting in rebuilding their academic confidence.

Between 2006-2010, I took a break from practicing psychotherapy -- writing and teaching -- and moved to Telluride, CO., where I worked as a real estate assistant for an owner/broker of a luxury real estate firm. By the way, we had no properties under $1M and 90% of our deals were cash. As the assistant to the owner, I was responsible for smooth negotiations with high profile clients, attorneys from around the world, due diligence as well as prestigious copywriting, photo shoots and ad campaigns for the company at large.

And while some days I wonder why I ever left life at 10,000 ft., to come to Houston, it is an endurance challenge to manage to, annually, sell over $100,000,000 worth of resort property given that extreme physical environment.
I, therefore, feel qualified to tutor both marketing and basic business principles at an undergraduate level.

I wrote movie reviews for papers all over the SW, and taught Film Criticism at the University of North Carolina for five years. That job led to teaching Arts & Ideas at UNC. I consider myself to be an expert film critic.

Having taken both Logical in graduate school Statistics, as well as Philosophy as part of my Masters degree in Clinical Psych, I feel comfortable in tutoring graduate level "critic thinking". The ability to assess data utilizing the perspective gained from critical thinking also applies to Philosophy, Scientific research projects as well as Political Science essays and exams.

I am a licensed psychotherapist who has been in private practice for 20 years. I also just finished teaching Psychology at a local college.

Public Speaking

I worked as a live television reporter under the scrutiny of 250,000 viewers for five years.

Many people consider Sociology as a "cousin" to Psychology. In fact, I minored in Sociology at the University of Colorado. I have taken many courses in Sociology, with a focus on what's happening with the "Tech Revolution" and popular culture at large. I read everything I can and keep up with Sociological issues (how 'bout that last fight for the presidency). While each Sociology class is different, I feel competent to tutor in my second passion, Sociology.

Study Skills

In my "Subject Competence" description, I mentioned that I have been a licensed psychotherapist and worked with hundreds of people who have "resistance" to acquiring good study skills. I am quite confident that good study skills are easily acquired if the student is not only encouraged, but gets to examine all of the "payoffs" for NOT having successful study skills.

Lessons with Ashely are great. Ashely is a wonderful person. She helps with what you need to work on. She's trying to break the barriers in my mind, and working on run-ons. I have been reading books to lean more, as I keep encouraging myself to go further, and study on my own. I'm a very intelligent person, but I need to get what I'm getting so far, from what I can afford. She knows how to work with you and she talks about wher ...
