I am an English professor at Houston Community College (HCC). I possess a BA in English from the University of St. Thomas in Houston and an MA in English from University College Cork in Ireland. Aside from teaching at HCC, I have tutored high school and college students needing help with writing, along with ESL students needing assistance in English language skills.

I am patient and good-humored. I have diverse interests outside of my main field of English literature (e.g., history and social studies). Outside advanced mathematics and music, I feel competent tutoring most subjects at the primary and secondary level.

Additionally, while I was living in Colorado this summer, I passed the PLACE exams for teaching social studies and English at the secondary level, qualifying me to teach both subjects in Colorado high schools.

Finally, I was recently approved to substitute teach a St. John's School.

Please feel free to message me with any questions you may have.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I recently completed and passed the Colorado PLACE exam for teaching Social Studies in secondary school.

Study Skills

I am a graduate student who spent the last six years working full-time and attending school. Managing my time and having proper study habits was essential. I believe I am qualified to help students get organized.

Writing

I can help in the following forms of writing:

- Essays (exposition, persuasive, etc)
- Prose (short stories, journals, etc)
- Poetry (free form)
- Drama (contemporary)
- General (emails, notetaking, etc)

If you have a writing need, I can help you hash out your ideas and produce a quality piece.
