All of Shahnaz’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Shahnaz’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

ADD/ADHD

For the past 12 years, I have worked as an associate teacher, extra teacher, substitute teacher, and a tutor in an after school program. I have taught all grade levels and all subjects. I have taught special education in public schools from 1 to 6 week intervals. These classes are classified as ADD/ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, and MR. For 4 years I taught at an alternative school for students with behavioral problems. My time teaching in special education classes has shown me that most children can learn new things and new attitudes by a teacher being firm, using repetition and rewarding good behavior.

Dyslexia

For 12 years I have taught in public schools. The subjects I have taught have been in special ed, down syndrome, handicapped, mental retardation, etc. I have been involved with boy scouts (4 years), I have mentored children and love to inspire them. I feel that I have had an impact on the lives of children from schools to scouts, neighborhood kids, and my own son who has a healthy mind, who excels in school, karate, robotics, and more. The biggest complement I received was hearing my son tell an adult 'my mom is great with kids'. Children at school often tell me that I taught them cool things and inspired them. I love to see the light go on in a child's mind.

Elementary (K-6th)

For the past 12 years I have worked as an extra teacher, associate teacher, substitute teacher and I have tutored students in an after school program. I am familiar with public school districts lesson plans for grades pre-k thru 12th. I have taught all grade levels and all subjects including math, English, ESL, history, social studies, art, auto mechanics, science, teen leadership skills, biology, language arts, spelling, world history, geography, and many others.

Phonics

For the past 12 years I have been an extra teacher, an associate teacher, a substitute and a tutor in an after-school program. My experience with phonics has been on the elementary level, ESL/all grade levels and in special education classes. Also, my experience with phonics includes teaching my own child even now at the high school level.

Study Skills

For the past 12 years I have worked as an extra teacher, an associate teacher, substitute and tutor in an after-school program. I am familiar with public school testing having worked in public schools for more than 12 years. Some of things I have learned along the way I have incorporated into my own child's learning with a good amount of success. It's not hard for students to grasp a few simple rules like reading the question twice and elimination. When it comes to tests students are expected to understand a question stated in different ways thus tripping the student up. Teaching a student different ways to state something can make a difference when taking a test.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
