I have a passion for helping students succeed and have been tutoring over twenty years. Teaching in a regular classroom is great but one-on-one tutoring is much more effective. I love learning but have not always been a teacher. I worked in industry over twenty years, earned a lucrative salary, and had a promising career. However, I was not fulfilled. As a community service project, I began volunteering at the local high school, tutoring Math and Science. I found my calling and gained an excellent track record helping students, who had previously failed, pass exit exams. In return, these same students encouraged me to seek a career in teaching. I earned an alternative teacher's certification and taught Chemistry and Integrated Physics and Chemistry in the public school system over ten years.
One of the main reason I am so successful at tutoring is my diverse background. Since I worked in the real world, I use real-life examples as teaching tools. This enables me to clarify, otherwise, complex concepts. My love for education and concern for the success of my students led me to return to school myself after some twenty years. As a result, I now have three degrees - one technical, one business, and the last one, spiritual. This enables me to be a well-rounded educator who will use any accessible skill in my toolbox to help a student comprehend a concept. I evaluate a student's strengths and weaknesses, then put an individualize teaching plan into action. Because of my age and life experiences, parents tend to feel more comfortable with me teaching their student or being in their home. Additionally, my belief is that when a student sees how much effort is put into personalizing a lesson plan, he or she feels valued and is more likely to rise to expectation. In either case, everybody wins - the student, the parent, and the tutor. I have a passion for helping students succeed and have been tutoring over twenty years. My son has been struggling with Algebra throughout the school year and I decided that I was fed up with teachers saying that they have done all that they can do to help my son pull up his grades. I knew my son had the ability to do his lessons but I felt that it had to be another option. I googled Algebra tutors and came across WyzAnt. I debated on if this was a wise choice several times. Finally, I said that I was going to hire a tutor. I sent messages to several tutors but only 1 tutor responded immediately. Believe it or not but this is the tutor that I had a great feeling about out of all of the ones that I had chosen. It has been great working with Carolyn. She has brought the self esteem back to my son. He's striving to do the best in his Algebra class. Just recently he made an 85 on an exam and he has never scored this high throughout the entire school year in Algebra. Carolyn is truly a blessing and is very passionate and has your child's best interest in mind with each session. I highly recommend her!
Ms. Carolyn has been an angel! She has proved that no matter how trying the situation, she can and will resolve the issue. She is reliable and focused. She has been a blessing to our household!
She was very caring, patient, and great at making a connection with the student. I'm looking forward to my daughter's next lesson with Ms. R.
My children and I are very new to tutors, especially a stranger coming in to our home. I was a little skeptical at first about safety. I'm so glad I found Mrs. Carolyn through WyzAnt; its the best decision I have made so far for my children's educational needs. WyzAnt has been very professional. My children love Mrs. Carolyn. She is really patient, nice, and overall, wonderful. My children have made an improvement in the short time she has been with us looking forward to more progress to come.
Carolyn's very patient and good with teens. I plan to use her again. My daughter enjoyed working with Ms.R. She was warm and friendly and has great tutoring skills. I'm glad we found her!
Carolyn has been working with my daughter over the past 6 weeks...SAT's are in October. We are both very pleased with the progress she is making. Carolyn is patient and explains sentence structure in a way Toni can relate and put what was taught into practice. We have asked Carolyn to continue helping my daughter through the application process to multiple colleges even after she takes the SAT. Thank you very much WyzAnt for offering such a great service!!!
Carolyn helped my daughter Sarah immensely in her high school Chemistry that she had been struggling with all semester. Carolyn's reassuring and always positive attitude helped lower my daughter's anxiety and she was able to focus on Carloyn's detailed and down to earth instructions.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra was my favorite subject in school. I even remember my high school Algebra I teacher, Mrs. White. She created in me a love for Algebra and I get that same joy when I am able to help students master this subject. Even though I am a Chemistry major, Math was my minor, and I had to take everything from Basic Math to Calculus. I believe one-on-one tutoring in Algebra can make all the difference in the world. I tutor many subjects on a regular basis, but get the most practice in Algebra I, II, and Pre-Algebra.
In December of 2011, I earned a Master's degree in Theology and a certification in Spiritual Direction. My course work included Old and New Testament, Christian Theology, Christian Spirituality, History of Christian Worship, Theological Foundations of Christian Spirituality, just to name a few. For practical experience, I have been leading a small group young adult Bible study over five years, now. Because of the extensive research required for my degree, I have a private library of sources readily available and if need be, I have access to Rice University's library and other seminaries in the area.
I am a Chemistry major and am currently teaching high school Chemistry in the public school system. I simply love balancing equations, writing formulas, and calculating moles. Even thought I am a classroom teacher, I am also highly sought after for one-on-one tutoring. One of my main strengths is applying real-life applications to the subject matter. For example, I have been known to perform simple experiments right in the home in an effort to help a student understand. Since I am currently teaching Chemistry, I have access to updated and innovated materials. One of the main advantages of teaching is that whenever you teach a subject, you get a clearer understanding of the subject and it is therefore, easier to articulate it more effectively. With that said, I still believe that one of the main advantages of teaching/tutoring is seeing a student's eyes light up whenever he or she masters a concept.
I am a Chemistry major with a Math minor. However, Math is and has always been my first love. I have tutored all ages in Math and find that a solid Elementary Math foundation can provide a stronger base for the latter years. In fact, many students struggle in high school because they missed key fundamentals during their earlier years. Also, my current experience shows me that Math concepts are more complex now during the early years. If I can tutor a student while they are in elementary, then they will be more prepared during their high school and college years.
Since I am a Chemistry major, Science is my main subject. Understanding how things work is vital to living a quality life. When students make the connection between what they are learning in school and how they are living, it begins to make sense to them. When things make sense, students are more apt to do better in the class. My tutoring style is to make things simple and life applicable. Still the best part of tutoring or teaching is witnessing that light bulb moment - when a student really gets it!
I am a Chemistry major with a Math minor. However, Math has always been my first love. During the twenty years I have spent tutoring, I find that a solid Prealgebra foundation is vital if a student is to be successful in Algebra and Geometry during high school. Additionally, Math concepts are more complex now than ever before; therefore, students need a solid background in fundamental concepts. My specialty is breaking down the concepts and making them simple and life applicable.
Reading is the answer to other subjects' problems. Most students do not do well on tests because their reading comprehension is limited. In fact, understanding word meaning is crucial to answering any question whether it is in Math, Science, English or another subjects. Obtaining two masters degrees allowed me to expand my knowledge in various directions. As a result, I can help students connect new words to prior knowledge and to things that are familiar to them. This way, they better understand what the question is asking and is more likely to choose the correct response.
Since I am a Chemistry major and a Mathematics minor, I have tutored all high school subjects where there is an Exit exam required to graduate. In fact, my specialty is preparing high school students for Exit exams. When STAAR first came into existence, I tutored Biology and Algebra that first year. Out of approximately fifty students, only one failed. At that time, Chemistry was also a required STAAR subject. My six classes totaling 130 students had a 96% passing rate that first year. Since I am a certified teacher and have over twenty years tutoring experience, I have a wealth of resources at my disposal. This enables me to tailor my tutoring specifically to a particular student where the strength of one-on-one tutoring ultimately lies.
I have a BS in Chemistry and a minor in Math. I am a certified secondary science teacher and taught Chemistry in the public school system for seven years. Even before I began teaching, I tutored at the local high school as a community service. My specialty quickly became helping seniors pass exit exams. Before TAKS, there was TAAS, and now there is STAAR. I have experience in all three and have been tutoring over fifteen years. Even while I was teaching, I was highly sort after when a senior needed to pass an exit exam. I have a near perfect passing rate when students commit their time and are serious. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring in small settings, whether it is one-on-one or small groups. What I find that works is getting the student to focus on key words and what that word mean in that particular context. Then, they must understand exactly what the question is asking. This way, they can narrow down the choices and eliminate the unreasonable ones. Additionally, I tailor my attention to the particular needs of that students because all students are different. Since I have been tutoring so long, I have a wealth of material and resources. Not only am I proficient in Chemistry and Math, I also know Biology and Physics.
Just recently, I discovered that I had a love for writing. I journal daily and write lessons for a small group study weekly. Also, I edit and proofread students' papers and essays on a regular basis. While earning my second master's degree, the major requirement was researching and writing papers. Therefore, I was forced to learn how to write scholarly. I am happy to admit that all that hard work paid off because I graduated summa cum laude. Of course, good writing takes time and much effort; however, since it is so fresh on my mind, I am in a great position to help students now.
