I have over 40 years of experience teaching English grammar and literature, Speech Communication and Public Speaking as well as Theatre Arts at the high school and university level. I have been fortunate to work with students from a broad variety of countries and cultures. I have worked with international students from the age of five up to seventy as a teacher of English as a Second Language. I have taught test preparation for both college and graduate school admissions exams, including ACT, SAT and TOEFL preparation. I have developed and taught classes that focus on the needs of academically challenged students.

I tailor my instruction to the needs of the individual student or student group. I can easily alter my approach to cater to a student's immediate objective and then shift to a comprehensive technique that addresses long term learning goals.

Vocabulary

TOEFL

The Test of English as a Second Language--the TOEFL--requires you to apply English skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Also tested as part of the speaking and writing sections is one's correct use of English grammar. All of these skills can be improved with an experienced instructor. With 20 years of experience in TOEFL preparation, I have assisted hundreds of students to achieve their score goal on the TOEFL and I can help you do the same.

ACT Reading

The Reading section of the ACT is only one of three sections that test one's English language skills. Test takers will be asked to read four passages and answer a set of questions about each passage. ACT English

The English sections of the ACT cover a range of language skills including: Usage and Mechanics, Rhetorical Skills (the effective use of strategy, organization and style in persuasive writing), Reading Comprehension and Analysis, as well as Writing. Although one may feel comfortable using English on a daily basis, the ACT may catch even a very skilled student off guard once he or she is asked to apply these skills in a structured, timed test environment.

Phonics

I have a degree in Speech Communication and a background in teaching English pronunciation using phonics and the International Phonetic Alphabet. I have taught students as young as five as well as students from 16 to 60. I have taught English pronunciation to high school classes as well as at the college level.

Study Skills

Organization, note-taking, priority-setting and recognition of helpful resources all contribute to more effective learning no matter what the subject may be. My 16 years of secondary school teaching and 15 years of college teaching, including specific work assisting learning challenged students, has given me a broad background in effective study skill instruction.

Swimming

I was a competitive swimmer as a youth and was certified by the American Red Cross as a Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor. I taught swimming to children and adults for several years. In college, I was chosen to teach swimming for the Physical Education Department. I can teach you in your private pool or at a gym or club pool where you are a member. I continue to enjoy swimming several times a week for exercise and relaxation.

Theatre

I am certified by the State of Texas to teach Theatre Arts. I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre. I have taught Theatre Arts at the high school and university level. I have designed and directed more than 40 plays and musicals.

ESL/ESOL

I have 21 years of experience teaching English as a Second Language at the college level and for an internationally recognized proprietary education and test preparation company.

Sewing

Whether you want to make an apron for yourself or as a gift, I can help you. Or, if you want to design and make your own prom or wedding dress, I can help you with that too. I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in theatre design and production, including costume design and construction. I can guide you with mastering the simplest of hand-sewing techniques to advanced design and execution.

Drawing

I have a Master of Fine arts in Theatre Design and technology. I am an accomplished artist in a variety of media including pencil, water color, tempura, and oils. I have enjoyed art as a leisure activity and as a professional scenic and costume designer with dozens of productions in my credits. I can help you with basic drawing techniques as well as figure drawing and perspective. Let me help you make your ideas come to life in the media of your choice.

Public Speaking

I am certified by the State of Texas to teach Speech Communication. I have taught Public Speaking at the high school and university level. I am, myself, an experienced public speaker.
