I tutored after-school elementary students for 4 months as an Americorps member from September 2011 to January 2012. I enjoy the prospect of helping students master the material they need to know to be successful in life, even if the specific material will not be relevant to the career they end up going into.
Most notably, I want students to know the truth, as best as it can be expressed, in history and in other subjects where there is bias as a result of political and moral sensitivities. I resent that many history texts are biased and omit tons of information, so I plan to educate students about what really happened and who the real villains of history are. Most history textbooks imply that once a civilization is conquered and they no longer have an empire, that the people that made up that civilization no longer exist, like the Assyrians, Akkadians, and Chaldeans of Ancient Mesopotamia. For parents that do not want their children to know the whole truth of history for political, religious, or moral reasons, they can tell me and I will tutor based on the individual teacher's curriculum.
I have not developed my own method of tutoring, but I am a patient man, and will explain things as best I can, as many times as it takes for the kids to learn the material. I will be firm and gentle when it comes to disciplinary aspects, if it comes to that. For kids that are seriously misbehaving, I will notify their parents but make sure the parents' disciplinary methods are not iffy in my eyes.
I am Jewish, white, play guitar, and good at memorizing dates. I am great at spelling, basic math, history, anthropology, social sciences, language arts, grammar, phonics, some science, and reading/literature. In school, I did not feel the need to study much until high school, but I know different students learn in different ways. I made good grades throughout school, from A+ grades to D grades. Very few F's. I never flunked nor skipped a grade in school, started school right on time, was in special education classes from when I was in pre-K through when I was in 4th grade. The reason why I was in special education classes during that time was because I was diagnosed with autism and ADHD after I was slower in development than normal and an incident when I was in Montessori School. I can almost pass as normal today unless you watch me closely over a long period of time.
I am thrilled at the opportunity to be a tutor to kids of all ages. Thank you for the chance to make that happen. I would love to make a great contribution to the future generation, just like past generations have done to some degree for my generation.
I have always been good at history, because I'm great at memorizing dates and events that happened on certain dates.
I studied anthropology in college, and in fact I minored in it. I took Introduction to Anthropology in Fall 2009, Physical Anthropology in Fall 2006, Anthropology of Tourism/Anthropology of Race in Spring 2010, and Anthropology of Diseases in Antiquity and Cultural Ecology in Fall 2010. I find it to be fascinating, and it's kind of an extension of history and social studies.
I am very good at classics, if this means ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. This goes hand in hand with history. I have always been good at history and fascinated by philosophy. I took Introduction to Ethics in Spring 2008, a college course.
I tutored elementary school students as an Americorps member for 4 months, mostly at Crockett Elementary School, from September 2011 to January 2012.
I tutored elementary school students in elementary science for 4 months.
I tutored elementary school children, grades 1 through 5, in English, for 4 months.
I tutored some 1st-5th graders in European History for 4 months.
I have always been good at grammar. I have learned a lot about grammar from when I was in elementary school all the way through some of college.
I have been reading since I was 4 years old. I studied reading when there was Hooked On Phonics being tried out, in the early-to-mid 1990s. I learned how to read by sounding words out. In 8th grade, on the Stanford Test, I was at a college level of reading.
I have always been good at proofreading. I notice misspelled words, typos, and punctuation mistakes right off, without even trying.
I took public speaking in 10th grade and 11th grade, then in my second semester of college. I made good grades and learned so much about body language, posture, critiquing constructively, and writing essays and research papers without citing sources, which gave me a head start in writing essays in college.
I started reading when I was 4 years old and love reading at every minute that I can.
I have never been afraid of reciting speeches. I was taught how to by a great teacher, as well as how to write speeches, and recite them to a certain audience. She also taught me how to tailor a speech based on the target audience. I made great grades in speech class.
I have a large vocabulary and love learning new words, still to this day.
I have always been good at world history, even though I think it's very biased. I can memorize dates, and events that happened on those dates.
I love writing, and I'm good at it. I have written a lot of essays for school.
