American History has always been fun. Politics, scandals, progress, battles, personalities--always something juicy.
I have retail(bath accessories, mini-blinds, furniture), wholesale (cookies, ads and interviews), inside (security systems-B2B and residential), B2B furniture repair, residential carpet cleaning) and outside sales (door-to-door dictionaries) under my belt.
I have advised businesses on marketing and PR in my position as sales rep. for a niche magazine, have set up accounting books (on paper, not the computer) for 2 businesses (cookies, carpet cleaning) for profit and loss tracking and taxes), hired and fired (bath accessory manager and security systems inside sales-B2B and residential).
After working for a year at Network Security doing B2b telesales, when it changed hands, I suggested to the new manager that the branch focus on residential sales. He agreed and asked me to put together a telemarketing call center for the residential side of the business. I, then, set up and put in place a system to coordinate 7 outside sales people and their appointments, and trained and supervised up to 5 other telemarketers. The branch was ultimately sold, but only after gaining citywide popularity in residential and commercial sales OVER name brand, national brands like ADT.
In addition, I recruited in inside sales (security systems), and recruited for the oil and gas and legal fields.
I currently run my own businesses: Insight Interviews (where I interview small business owners for their websites) a freelance sales business (selling ads for Natural Awakenings Magazine-Houston), a freelance writing and editing business (writing for Natural Awakenings Magazine-Houston and Dallas, plus others, editing fiction and non-fiction), and one of my sales accounts with NA has recently asked me to help him set up a program to market his specialty eyeglasses.
I have real world, hands-on experience in business that I can pass to others.
I am constantly baking and cooking, simply for the fun of it, plus I've written 1.) The Oatmeal Lover's Bible (a compilation of all sorts of recipes with oatmeal in them) and 2.) One of my chapters in my WIP, A Jewish Earth Mother's Guide to Pinching a Penny and Saving the World, lists recipes that are easy to make, economical, and taste good, too. (My recipes will not included with pork or shellfish or anything else unkosher, but you will find recipes that intrigue the taste buds and are fun to make.)
Grammar is changeable, quixotic, quirky and annoying (there are 14 style books that will tell you what's correct--or not).
One must understand what you are doing with grammar in order to make your thoughts come out clearly on paper.
As a writer with over 45 years experience, I think I have a handle on what I'm doing grammar-wise, and can show you ways to unscramble your ideas so you can more easily communicate with others.
Literature is culture and art combined to tell a story.
Good literature gives the reader insights as to the character and the moral compass of a time and place, the values that culture holds dear, in essence, it is almost a window to a time machine.
It is a window to the writer's imagination, as well.
As a professional editor, I help people every day with essays written for college entrance, papers and reports for college classes, fiction and non-fiction books, poetry, direct mail pieces, and even ad copy.
Using my expertise and often humor, I offer line by line help with proofreading, help with organizing a paper logically and cutting out extraneous material, as well as periodically offering hints on how to make the essay or paper deeper, and more meaningful.
You cannot write without reading.
The more you read, the better your vocabulary becomes. The better your vocabulary, the more respect you get from others.
The more you read, the more your communication skills will improve, not to mention improving your grasp of the world.
As a writer of over 45 years, I have a deep love of utilizing the huge and diverse vocabulary that English is blessed with.
Having studied linguistics, and having studied Hebrew, Spanish, French and Latin, I have a deeper understanding of how to teach a youngster or an adult new words and concepts.
I would be happy to share some of that understanding with any student at Wyzant.
I will take on almost any serious student of writing. My students find they learn and laugh in equal measure.
With over 45 years experience in writing and as an editor (freelance and for a monthly magazine in the Houston area), I write fiction (short stories and novels), poetry, non-fiction (business and marketing materials including press releases, direct mail and business letters), essays, articles, and books.
I can, therefore, guide any writer who wishes to improve their clarity, grammar and style. I've experience with unsnarling diction, suggesting transitions when needed, uncluttering sentences and paragraphs of unneeded materials, clarifying meaning and muddy plot lines,as well as suggesting simple corrections to diction and grammar.
