I am a retired elementary/middle school teacher who has a passion for building a student's confidence in mathematics and enhancing one's speaking/writing and presentation skills.

I tutor in the following subjects: General Math, Pre-algebra,Algebra, Life Sciences (Biology), SAT Prep, CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam), English and ESL. In the past, I have provided individual and small group tutoring to students from BCSD and Panama-Buena Vista Districts, as well as various high schools. I have also taught a prep course at Bakersfield College for the S.A.T. exam.

My goal is to empower students to improve their academic achievement by meeting with them regularly, and devising study skills and strategies appropriate for their desired goals.

I recognize that tutoring is a supplement to classroom teaching that fosters a student's learning and understanding. I go the extra mile to ensure a student's success by providing extra-curricular materials and activities to clarify a student's understanding.

When we study prealgebra, I like to closely review some of the building blocks for success in this area like: multiplication tables, lowest common denominators, factor trees, fractions, decimals, variables, one-step equations, two-step equations, recognizing like terms, combining like terms, etcetera.

Reading

All California credentialed teachers are reading teachers first. Although I love math, all children must read well to participate and thrive in American society. I have taught at the third thru 8th grades in my 20 plus teaching career and I can spot early reading problems like vowel sounds, dolch word recognition skills, sentence completion skills, and reading fluency. I am a credentialed public school teacher for the last 25 years. I have taught English to 4th-8th graders during these years depending on the job assignment given to me by my principal.

At home, I proofread the professional statements of my daughter,( who is now a college graduate seeking entry to pharmacy school) and was the proofreader for my husband when he was securing his masters in Public Policy.

Elementary Math

I have taught grades 4-8th for the past 25 years although I prefer teaching math. I am currently accruing additional skills to teach English Learners and additional math to secure a single subject math credential.

For the past two summers , I have taught in a Summer Algebra Institute tha develops the skils of 5th - 9th graders to handle Algebra for the passage of the CAHSEE test.

I currently possess a K-8 California multiple subjects teaching credential and have taught for 25 years in the largest elementary school district in California.
