Math:
I am certified through WyzAnt to tutor math through SAT level prep, including Algebra and Geometry.
I specialize in tutoring multiplication, long division, fractions, and word problems.
My personal approach is to use at least two different ways to explain concepts and personalize my tutoring style to the individual student.
For instance, I tutor fractions using food and money concepts, items with which a student is familiar.
Then we progress to how the division and multiplication of fractions works with the objects to create a complete understanding of the concept.
From a parent:
"Highly recommend!
Carrie tutored both my son and daughter in math. Her one-on-one teaching definitely helped, but her style of putting real life situations to the math problems truly made a difference in how they each looked at math. Historically, my son had difficulties in math. After working with Carrie, he wound up passing the TAKs test above the Standard Scale score on the first try. My daughter knew math, but would always second guess herself. Carrie helped her bring up her confidence in doing the math work, which in turn, kept my daughter in the mainstream class as opposed to a two-class-period block class. Carrie was very creative in working with my kids in finding that very thing that made it all "click" for each of them."
Reading/Language Arts/English/Writing:
I am certified through WyzAnt to tutor reading and writing through SAT level prep.
My middle school student last semester passed his reading TAKS after failing it the first time.
I think enthusiasm for reading is contagious. I tutor phonics and whole word recognition.
I tutor writing using a dictionary and thesaurus. I love to read, so I translate that enthusiasm into storytelling and essay writing.
Learning Difficulties, ADD/ADHD:
My sister has a form of dyslexia and I was her main math and reading tutor for many years. She is now the business quality
manager for a major Houston hospital.
I have some mono-sight and non-sight techniques, as well as clear colored reading overlays to assist with severe reading disorders.
I have some touch/motor techniques for tutoring children with ADD/ADHD. These involve focusing the physical mind on an object, like a foam ball, and then working on a school subject. I incorporate movement into as many of the concepts and lessons as possible.
Public Speaking/ESL:
I am a certified Toastmaster and Dale Carnegie graduate.
I tutor students in American English pronunciation and idioms and Texas idioms.
I work at HP, so many languages and accents are all around me on a daily basis.
Accounting:
I have an MBA in Management and currently work for Hewlett-Packard as a financial analyst. I tutor the first college accounting class including basic accounting, financial statement creation and analysis.
Please let me know if I can be of tutoring assistance.
