As an experienced teacher of 35 years, student success is the most important to me. I have had the pleasure of working with students in grades first through eighth. With an undergraduate degree in special education and a master's degree in education with a specialization in reading, I have varied techniques and strategies to help students in reaching their full potential. In my years of teaching in the classroom, I have had the honor to represent my school as Teacher of the Year. I received this honor as an elementary teacher and again as a middle school teacher.

I specialize in tutoring students in reading and writing. With a varied approach that focuses on each child's learning style and unique educational needs, I have been very successful in my teaching experience and tutoring. I hold myself to high standards and will communicate student's progress to parents in a timely fashion. With busy schedules, I understand that sometimes rescheduling is necessary. I have a 24 hours cancellation policy, but will offer make-up sessions for any student.

To ensure that students have a quiet and comfortable study space in which to work, I have a study in my home that I use for private lessons. However, I am willing to travel to another location if it is more convenient for parents and students.

I look forward to working with you and your child and helping them achieve their goals.

Sincerely,
Sheri H.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As an experienced teacher of 35 years in the classroom, I have taught and worked with numerous children with learning differences such as ADD/ADHD. I have an undergraduate degree in special education and have worked with students who require special considerations in the classroom.

Dyslexia

As a former reading specialist, I have worked with children who have dyslexia. These students need a special approach to reading; often they need a strong phonics approach to be successful when decoding words. Because of my reading background, I have many skills and strategies that would address the needs of the dyslexic student.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a third grade teacher of more than 12 years, I have had experience working with children at the elementary level. I have worked with students in first grade through fifth grade as a special education resource teacher.

Phonics

As a former third grade teacher and a seventh grade language arts teacher, I have experience teaching reading. I also have a masters degree with a specialization in reading. For many students, phonics is an approach to teaching the decoding of words.

Special Needs

As a former special education teacher, I have worked with many special needs students. With the understanding of specific learning differences, lessons can be designed to meet their unique learning needs. I have worked with students in the elementary and middle school settings.

STAAR

As a former 3rd and 7th grade teacher and a reading specialist, I have prepared students for and administered the STAAR test. While this test requires students to apply their skills through application, I have many strategies to help students meet the challenges of this rigorous test.

Study Skills

Study skills are imperative for all learners, however, as students begin their middle school years, they need a set of study skills to assist them in their core subject areas. These include skills such as how to take notes, where to file papers and notes, and ways to organize and manage time. With over 35 years of teaching experience, I can help students of all ages with these important skills.
