American History

Instruction in American History. Wherever possible, writings, art, and other data available from the time period are examined and discussed.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a teacher for over 30 years, and part of that time was spent either home schooling my children or helping them with their homework. I also currently tutor elementary-aged students. I have a thorough grasp of all basic Elementary School subjects, and am able to teach them.

Elementary Math

While Language Arts is my primary subject, I have tutored many students in early math concepts, and love seeing them build a solid foundation for their further math pursuits.

Elementary Science

While Language Arts is my primary area of expertise, I have taught elementary science to several students. It is always a delight to witness the joy of discovery that science experiments and experiences (microscopes, telescopes, etc.) can bring!

Reading for content and comprehension; Writing; Spelling; Grammar; Creative Writing; Anything in the Language Arts area.

Standard English Grammar - Parts of speech; Sentence Structure; Tense; Agreement; Anything Grammar-Related

British and American Literature; Mythology; Some Ancient Literature

I am a firm believer in a phonetic approach to reading and writing, and have such methods as the Spalding Method and others like it to teach reading, spelling and writing. I am currently tutoring using the STEPS (Sequential Teaching of Explicit Phonics and Spelling) Program, which incorporates the phonagrams used by the Spalding Method and expands on that teaching.

This is one of my favorite things to do! There are many approaches to this, whether face-to-face, or collaborating via Google Docs or Word. I love to work with writers (be they students or professionals) to hone and tighten their writing, optimizing it for their potential readers, and increasing their skill sets at the same time.

Public Speaking

This is a favorite teaching area for me! I have taught high school, and college students; as well as professionals and actors. I cannot count the number of people I have seen who have "bloomed" before my eyes, as they overcame fears, strengthened techniques and gained confidence. I have worked with students and professionals, and always count it a joy to coach / teach in Public Speaking. One of my favorite opportunities involving coaching competitive Speech, Debate and Acting teams. Several of the students I coached went to the National level of competition, and all of my students did very well.

I begin with an assessment of reading comprehension, reading fluency, and vocabulary. Once a general reading level is determined, work is begun with a goal to raise all levels of reading. This may include some instruction in spelling, grammar, vocabulary, etc., but that is determined according to the needs of the individual.

Phonics-based spelling instruction. The student's spelling level is assessed and phonics instruction is given for the Spalding Method of reading, writing and spelling. The student begins at his or her current spelling level, and we work our way up to higher levels. Frequently, instruction in grammar and writing are touched on, but the emphasis is on spelling and vocabulary.

I have taught theatre to students of all ages, from Kindergarten through adult. I have taught classes, directed productions, led seminars and workshops, and taught individuals.

I also developed the theater department for a large local church in Omaha, NE, which involved such things as: overseeing several teams, leading workshops, and training and directing actors and leaders.

Since that time, I have directed other productions as well, and have continued writing, speaking and acting.

Emphasis on Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes, along with grade-level-based vocabulary instruction and expansion.

Formal Writing; Creative Writing; Writing for Theater; Proofreading; In addition to instruction I also provide proofreading and editing services.
