I have taught, tutored, and counseled students at the elementary, secondary, and college levels over a period of fifteen years. My Texas State Certifications include Elementary (1-6), Special Education (EC-12), Social Studies (8-12), and School Counselor (EC-12). Students at all levels tend to feel comfortable in my presence as I am very patient and understand what they are going through if they are struggling. Although I am very good at elementary math, I had my struggles with this subject at the high school and college levels and certainly have not forgotten it. My favorite subject to teach is the writing process, and I am available to do so with any age group. My attitude toward writing is that, "If you are literate, and you can tell a story, then you can write about it." Many of my students have concurred with me on this. Being certified as a school counselor, I am quite good at reading how to approach and work with individual students and inspiring them to do their best. Students need to know that there is a reason for learning, and I do my best to express that reasoning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am certified in special education and school counseling, and have worked with students diagnosed with these disabilities at the elementary and secondary levels for several years.

American History

I am state certified in social studies (8-12), and have taught U.S. History for several years. My students' scores on state exams have generally been outstanding.

Baseball

As a junior and senior in high school, I was the captain of my baseball team. In my junior year, I was the most valuable player on my squad and won the "Green Bat Award" for having the team's highest batting average. As a sophmore, I was the right fielder on a state championship team. I also played at the community college level.

Basketball

I played four years of high school basketball, and was the captain and M.V.P. of my team during my senior year.

Career Development

As a state certified school counselor with a master's degree in counselor education, I have assisted high school and college students with the often confusing and intimidating chore of narrowing down career choices.

College Counseling

Having worked as a high school and community college counselor, I have adequate experience to advise young people as to where they might want to attend college and in what area they might want to major.

Dyslexia

I am a certified special education teacher in Texas, and have worked with students with dyslexia at the elementary and secondary levels.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am state certified as an elementary teacher in Texas, and have several years of classroom teaching and tutoring experience with these age groups.

Elementary Math

I am a state certified elementary teacher, and have taught and tutored elementary students in math at all elementary grade levels

English

I taught the language arts at the elementary level for three years, with my students enjoying exceptionally high scores on the state exams in each of those years.

Geography

As a state certified social studies teacher, I have taught this subject at the secondary level for several years. I have also taught the same at the fourth grade level.

Grammar

I taught the language arts for several years at the fourth grade level, with my students enjoying exceptionally high grades on the state exams.

Phonics

I am certified as a special education teacher (EC-12) in Texas and have taught the language arts to special education and regular education students for four years. I am currently tutoring a special education student where phonics is probably our main focus.

Psychology

With a master's degree in counseling, and an undergraduate minor in psychology, I have had ample coursework in psychology to tutor within this subject area. I have taught Introduction to Psychology at the high school level, and Social Psychology at the college level.

Public Speaking

As a high school and college instuctor, I have had dozens of students develop and deliver oral presentations to their classmates. I have guided many of these students through this process in private and in small groups. I had difficulties with presenting in front of others in years past, and understand the fears that many people have of speaking in front of others. The key to delivering a succcessful presentation is preparation. By learning what it is that you are presenting as if you are telling a story, your delivery will be smooth and probably interesting.

Reading

As a state certified elementary teacher, I taught reading for several years at the fourth grade level. My students enjoyed exceptionally high scores on the state exams.

Social Studies

I am Texas state certified as a social studies teacher, and have taught within this subject area at the elementary, secondary, and college levels.

I hold a bachelors and master's degree in sociology, and have taught within this subject area at four colleges.

Special Needs

I am Texas state certified as a special education teacher (EC-12), and have worked with special needs students at the elementary, secondary, and college levels.

Spelling

I have taught spelling at the fourth and fifth grade levels, with most of my students finding our lessons "fun."
