My Core Belief:

Learning things does not have to be boring, or mundane. I realize that each person has their own way of learning, and not only will I meet my students where they are, but during the first session, I will provide an assessment that will include the following information based on the individual needs of my students:

-What type of learner they are.
-Things they can do in the future or at home to help them progress the best as they learn.
-(If applicable) Things the family members of my students can do to help.
-Where they stand with regards to the subject they are learning.

The assessment will also give me information about:

-The type of lessons I need to prepare to teach (my lessons are tailored to each of my students to help them understand best)
-Where the best place would be to start teaching so the maximum interest is gained from my students.

Spanish/English Specifics:

I understand what it's like to have such a tough time learning a language, or anything else for that matter, because I was there. I started Spanish classes in 5th grade and continued my classes all through high school. My only problem was that the method of the teachers at my school didn't work for me. They had a set curriculum that they had to teach to all the students, which left little to no room for individual acknowledgement, and ultimately, I hated having to go to Spanish class for that reason. I wasn't making progress. But during my sophomore year in high school, I met a friend who was a Latino, and he taught me that speaking Spanish is actually AWESOME! So as he tutored me, I went from struggling to say "Hola" because I was so timid to being able to have full on conversations by the end of my sophomore year. And all because he didn't start by teaching me Spanish. He started by teaching me why Spanish is so awesome at the same time, and at the same time, he was working me into the Latino culture through language. Because I loved it so much, I wanted to help others with the same things I needed help on.

This is the reason I want to help others so much. I know what it's like to be in situations where people are explaining every bit of the material down to the simplest form they think is possible when in reality, you don't need it to be simple... You need it to be explained in a way that you can understand.

Credentials:

I've been speaking Spanish fluently for almost 10 years now, and have had the opportunity to be semi-immersed in the Latino culture for 2 years. This was a church mission service where I taught Latinos English, Americans Spanish, and about the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Spanish.
(Please note that I will not bring religion into my teaching method unless I am specifically asked to do so.)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I've been working with ADD/ADHD children for about 15 years now. I started with my 2 younger brothers and branched from there. For a year, I took an internship with an elementary school to study the interaction of children with these disabilities, and I've taken child development classes to be able to understand the mentality of children who have many different learning disabilities. I am currently in school to become a psychiatrist so I can make a career out of helping children with learning disabilities.

ESL/ESOL

I've taught English to Latinos for years, mostly on a mission trip in San Jose, California. I've had experience with whole classes as well as individual lessons, and have worked with a variety of ages, as well as a variety of personality types.

Grammar

I love when I write a paper for a class, and when I do the spell check, or grammar check for the paper, it tells me there are no errors. I believe whole heartedly that being able to us the correct form of grammar in any language that you are proficient in will help you in every area of your life whether it's creating a resume for work, writing a school paper, or maybe just having a conversation with someone. It definitely feels good when people think you're smart. This is also another thing I would focus on when I taught ESL, and Spanish for so many years.

Spanish

I've taught Spanish to Americans and English to Latinos for over 2 years, and am very experienced at it.

I was once a struggling Spanish student, and I learned what I needed to to know how to speak, read, and write the language fluently. I've been speaking Spanish fluently for 10 years now, and I would love to help others as I was helped.

Study Skills

I've had great successes with the study skills that I've been using to get me through high school and college. And I've been building on those study skills as well, because I'm working on getting my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, and in my first course alone they gave me several techniques to use that I would like to share with others to help them.

Encouraging, insistent — Thanks for taking on our son and helping him in Spanish. It is his highest focus right now to "Be the Cool Kid" as you've noticed. He has had very poor Spanish teachers in his past yet must read and write Spanish for his finals. With your constant insistence and pushing maybe he will begin to enjoy and read Spanish. Keep up the good work of encouraging him, having him read, and finding ways he ...
