My 29 year career has been civil engineering for significant projects. BUT my passion is teaching those who want to learn. I love teaching math and math related subjects.
In college I graded papers and tutored up to 30 people at the same time. As an engineer, I mentored engineers. As a Scout leader I taught people many skills.
Math is a way of thinking. Many students start by believing that they cannot learn math. But they can.
Some students think I am mean because of my rules. I believe in them, even when they do not. I care about them more than they realize. But I insist on certain rules so they can learn.
Each student must:
1. WANT to learn, for whatever reason
2. Do their best to learn and never give up
3. Tell me what they are thinking
4. Be patient and trust me in the learning process
5. Be committed, trustworthy and meet as agreed.
In return, I will do my best to:
1. Be enthusiastic about teaching
2. Teach
3. Understand my student's thinking process
4. Guide my student to a better way of thinking
5. Be there for my student as a coach, mentor and cheering squad.
The success of my students to date: Each has made a "B" or higher after completing tutoring. Each learns "how to think" math, such that I don't worry about them again.
I can see their faces light up as they finally "get it".
