As a former teacher I have 15 years of experience in teaching 6th-8th grades in a variety of configurations, including self-contained (all subjects), honors and at-risk. Each of these positions has required that I developed the ability to tailor instruction to a variety of learners. In this capacity I have become particularly proficient in using technology to differentiate instruction. My son has had 4 lessons so far with Bonnie and she has been wonderful with him. This is his first time with a tutor and I am glad he is having such a positive experience. He actually came home excited about his lesson! She assessed his reading and writing level quickly and directed attention specifically to where he needed help the most. He is learning to be more conscientious about his writing and we are very thankful.
She is 5-10 minutes early to arrive and gives a brief overview of what she did with during the lesson afterwards, as well as an email report. She is also quick to respond to emails and texts.
Bonnie knows how to tutor a middle school student and get the job done! She works diligently with my daughter and ends with a lot accomplished!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a BA in English from Madonna University, with elementary education minor. I also have an MA in Teaching from Marygrove College. I'm certified to teach K-6, all subjects in Michigan, and I'm currently in the process of Texas certification (same levels). I have experience tutoring students at the elementary level as well as at the middle-school level.
As a middle-school teacher I was assigned to teach a self-contained (all subjects) classroom for 11 of the 15 years I taught. All of the students in my first cohort passed the state test in mathematics.
As I gained teaching experience, I learned to use math centers and online technology to improve my skills as a teacher. One student (6th grade), in my last class, moved from a 3rd grade level to a high school level in one year. Although his progress was the most remarkable, the majority of the students in this class advanced well past one grade level.
I was an English major at Madonna University in Livonia, MI. I was the recipient of Madonna's "Writing Across the Curriculum" award. This is an award given to to one senior student in each discipline. I was nominated by the Dean of the English department. Currently, I am a teacher-consultant for the Wayne State University branch of the National Writing Project.
I have recently relocated to Texas from Michigan, where I was a middle school teacher for 15 years. Although I was certified to teach all subjects, my specialty was English, which heavily emphasizes grammar in the middle school years.
I was also a Teacher-Consultant and a Teacher-Leader for the Wayne State branch of the National Writing Project. My involvement with the NWP allowed me to stay current in my craft both as a teacher and a writer.
As a middle-school English teacher for 15 years, I have had ample proof reading experience. I am also a Teacher-Consultant for the Wayne State University chapter of the National Writing Project, a nationally renowned association which develops and uses best practices in the teaching of writing.
As an English teacher for 15 years, I have had the opportunity to teach students with a diverse range of reading abilities. In my last class, for example, the abilities ranged from 1st through 10th grade levels. All of these children progressed more than one grade level in my class, with the majority progressing two or more grade levels.
As an undergraduate student, I was the recipient of the senior "Writing Across the Curriculum" award from Madonna University. One student for each subject was selected for this award--my nomination was from the Dean of the English Dept., Dr. R. Sax.
During my years as a teacher, I had the pleasure to serve as a teacher-leader for the Wayne State Chapter of the National Writing Project. This position gave me the opportunity to remain current in my craft as a writer and as a teacher of writing.
