Hi! My name is Susan. It's nice to meet you. I taught for 16 years in grades 1st through 5th in the United States and overseas. I spent several years in 3rd grade teaching Reading and Math to English Language Learners and ESL students and helping them prepare for the TAKS(now STAAR)test. I also taught 4th grade Writing and 5th grade Science. For two years, I taught 1st grade. During my last year, I taught second grade. Having taught all grades from first to fifth, I am familiar with the curriculums and the way subjects overlap and progress from grade to grade. In my classes I used many different teaching methods and tried anything that would help motivate students to learn--from traditional approaches to puppets and rock music. Everyone learns in a different way. In a classroom full of students it's often hard to find what works for a particular student. That's why I love tutoring! It's wonderful to watch someone who was struggling become successful and self-confident. I can't wait to meet you and your child so we can get started.
Reading and writing numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, recognizing and counting money, telling time, measuring, estimating, algebraic thinking, logical reasoning, problem solving- -what are these things? These are just some of the math skills we learn in elementary school, and they are essential to our daily lives. These basic skills are the foundation for every other kind of math students will be exposed to as they progress in school. Even complicated subjects like trigonometry and physics require using these basic skills in their problem solving process. It's important for students to leave elementary school with a strong base in math. In my experience, when students say they don't like doing math, it usually means they aren't good at it. And no one likes to do something they aren't good at! I've always enjoyed math and I try to make it fun for my students. I use little sayings and rhymes to help them remember, like "B B B" or "if it's Bigger on the Bottom you Borrow", or "Go with what you know" for problem solving, or fun facts like " an odd number times an odd number always equals an odd number." If your child is having difficulty with math, I'm sure I can find an approach that works.
Learning phonics, or phonetics, is essential for success in reading. Accomplished readers don't have to keep stopping to decode unfamiliar words. But beginning readers do. We first learn to read by memorizing the sounds individual letters make. Then we move on to attributing specific sounds to different letter combinations. We study long and short vowels, digraphs, diphthongs, and the rules of pronunciation. This knowledge is used as a tool to unlock new words. Eventually the new words are added to our memory and we recognize them "on sight". Phonics is one of the methods I've used to teach students of all ages to become confident, fluent readers.
I have extensive experience in reading in first through fifth grades. I look forward to working with your student.
