Students will be tested to check their understanding of prealgebra knowledge, such as place value, number theory, arithmetic concepts, geometric concepts, and algebraic thinking. Once the evaluation is made I will determine which concepts have to be reviewed and reinforced, and then build from there the algebraic concepts studied in school. Algebra requires students to be competent in all basic concepts of arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication and, specially, division.
As an elementary bilingual teacher, I had to prepare students for the TAAS state test, later called TAKS, and now we have the STAAR. My major challenge working with Spanish speaking students was to help them acquire enough English to be able to take these tests in their second language. I have taught all subject, reading, writing, math, science, social studies. Elementary reading and math were always of the utmost importance for me. I also gave Spanish lessons for students enrolled in the Dual-Language program.
Teaching elementary science is a great deal of fun. It requires to stress on the importance of knowing reading, writing, and math to be able to understand the depth of the scientific method. The basic concepts to be learned are: a) the scientific method, b) safety in the science lab, c) study of i. Earth science (rock cycle, landforms, energy resources, fossils and evidence of extinct life), ii. life science (life cycle, food chain, ecosystems, carbon-oxygen-nitrogen cycles, physical traits of species, and inherited traits and mechanisms) iii. physical science (matter, force, motion and energy), and iv. natural science (weather and space phenomena).

Since geometry is the study of 1, 2, or 3 dimensional figures and their properties, it is always good to begin tutoring a student by finding first which basic areas of number theory, algebraic reasoning, and geometry is the student having trouble understanding. I will make a quick evaluation test consisting of question on straight lines and their properties, measurement, angles, triangles and their properties, polygons of different orders, perimeter and area, circles and their properties, polyhedrons and their properties, surface area, volume and scales.
Once I have an idea of which concepts are sound (or strong) and which are showing weaknesses, I will determine the corresponding course of action.

Mathematical concepts that are reviewed and reinforced: 1) the use of ratios to describe proportional relationships involving numbers, geometry, measurement, probability, and adding and subtracting decimals and fractions; 2) the purpose of algorithms and properties of rational numbers that explain real life situations; 3) algebraic thinking to describe relationships between variable values and results inside a mathematical model and how to connect verbal, numeric, graphic, and symbolic representations of these relationships.
¡Bienvenidos a mi clase de Español! I became a certified bilingual teacher for the state of Texas back in 2001. I taught all the subjects in 3rd grade to bilingual students who's 1st language was Spanish. I also taught Spanish to Dual-Language students who's first language was English. I gave Spanish to adults in after school programs. Being Spanish my first language I can teach it to the point of making you sound as native Spanish speaker.
