I am a certified teacher currently working both as a tutor (both in-person as well as online) as well as a substitute teacher (daily as well as long term) in Garland and Richardson school districts - which allows me an ongoing opportunity to stay in touch with the academic expectations for students in a variety of subjects and grade levels. Most recently, I have enjoyed working with students to improve math and reading skills both within the classroom, and outside the classroom in small groups. My certifications include EC-4 Generalist, 4-8 Generalist, 4-8 Mathematics, and EC-8 ESL supplemental. Additionally, I have a B.S. in Chemistry (Minor in Biology) and an MBA - both from the University of Texas at Dallas, and I graduated from North Garland High School 13th out of approximately 500 students, was a former member of the National Honor Society, and upon graduation was awarded a scholarship by the Optimist Club in Garland, TX.

I enjoy tutoring (either online or in person) in several different subjects; especially in math and science. I like the challenge of math, and helping students to understand it better! In addition to science and math, I have strong reading and writing skills, and would be happy to help students learn more about how to improve their reading, writing, spelling and vocabulary skills.

In summary, I truly enjoy learning new things, and would love to help students with areas they may be finding difficult. As a tutor who cares about helping students to be successful in the long run, I don't just give them the answers - I help them understand how to figure out problems and concepts themselves! I am available to tutor students (either individually or in groups) by appointment during the week and on Saturdays. I am also available to tutor online, via e-mail or by phone as well. I look forward to hearing from you!

Algebra 1

My certifications include EC-4 and 4-8 Generalist as well as 4-8 Mathematics and the EC-8 ESL Supplemental certification. In addition, I enjoy solving algebra problems!

Algebra 2

My certifications include EC-4 and 4-8 Generalist as well as 4-8 Mathematics and the EC-8 ESL Supplemental certification. In addition, I enjoy solving algebra problems, and would love to work with you on how to solve the Algebra 2 problems that you are studying via e-mail as you have requested.

Elementary (K-6th)

My certifications include EC-4 Generalist, 4-8 Generalist, 4-8 Math, and EC-8 ESL Supplemental.

Elementary Math

In addition to my EC-4 and 4-8 Generalist and 4-8 Math certifications, I have experience working with students of all ages in small groups to improve math skills using a variety of creative and fun teaching methods!

ESL/ESOL

My certifications include EC-4 and 4-8 Generalist as well as 4-8 Mathematics and the EC-8 ESL Supplemental certification.

Geometry

My certifications include EC-4 and 4-8 Generalist as well as 4-8 Mathematics and the EC-8 ESL Supplemental certification. In addition, I worked as a long term substitute teacher at a local high school in Garland this past year for 12 weeks teaching 10th grade geometry!

Prealgebra

In addition to my EC-4 and 4-8 Generalist teaching certifications, I also have a 4-8 Math certification and of course I completed numerous math courses in the process of obtaining my B.S. degree in Chemistry. I addition, I personally enjoy the challenge of solving algebra problems, and can patiently show students how to analyze what the problem is asking them to find, and then draw diagrams using the given information, and finally to solve it! Algebra is actually a lot of fun once students realize the basics of how to set the problems up, and I love helping students to be successful!

STAAR

In addition to the EC-4 Generalist, 4-8 Generalist, 4-8 Math, and ESL Supplemental certifications, I also have a B.S. in Chemistry. I am qualified to tutor students needing assistance with the TAKS/STAAR Reading, Writing and Math sections due to the fact that I have had experience as a long term substitute teacher working with students and teachers at two different elementary schools in the Garland ISD school district during the past three school years. Due to the fact that the STAAR test was implemented in the state of Texas during the 2011-2012 school year, my recent experience working with students to prepare them for the STAAR tests would also be applicable to helping students improve upon skills needed for the TAKS tests. Long term substitute teaching assignments during the past two years were spent working with students and teachers to help prepare them to take the STAAR tests. Prior to that time I worked at a different elementary school within Garland ISD under the direction of a teacher with small groups of kindergarten through 5th grade to improve reading and math skills. During the 2012-2013 school year I worked under the direction of several teachers with small groups of students in the 3rd grade to help improve reading and math skills that were needed for the students to be successful on the STAAR tests. This was done by working with students in small groups on specific skills such as reading comprehension and vocabulary as well as various math skills required for the 3rd grade test. I provided students assistance in various ways - including worksheets as well as fun "group project" assignments in a special STAAR Preparation Math "Camp" done once a week. Similarly, I worked with small groups of 4th grade students (alongside the teachers) who needed additional assistance with learning the necessary writing skills needed for the 4th grade STAAR writing test - including helping students with brainstorming ideas in order to come up with an outline or a rough draft, and then helped students with editing and proofreading. Additionally, I had an opportunity to work with small groups of 5th grade students to help them be more successful in passing their STAAR math test by reviewing specific 5th grade math skills that needed more explanation and understanding. The next school year (this past year) I had an opportunity to work for several weeks as a part of the intervention team with each grade level (including 1st through 5th grade) once per day on reading and math skills. I would be happy to work with students and parents to help improve writing, reading and math concepts as needed.

Study Skills

Good consistent study skills are one of the most important skills students can have in order to be successful in a variety of subjects. In reading, it is absolutely essentials for students to find something that they enjoy to read every day, and to spend time actually reading for a specified time each day in order to improve their reading skills. As a result of, the skills that students will gain from reading as much as possible each day will actually help them improve and be more successful in every single subject - not just in reading. In math, students must keep up with homework assignments from the very beginning of the school year, and work diligently to understand new concepts in each day's homework assignment, in order to not fall behind and get more and more confused - as the concepts in math often build upon each other - hence the importance for a solid foundation and understanding of the basic concepts. In math especially, if students don't understand a concept they should immediately ask lots of questions of whoever can help them, and try to keep up every day! Tutoring is almost always available - either outside or within the student's school. Understanding each day's homework, and continuing to review concepts for tests, and making sure that they understand how to solve math problems - not just memorizing a set of steps to take are key to doing well in math. Another very helpful study skill is to diligently keep a planner updated daily for each class - including daily homework assignments as well as larger projects and the "big picture" re: projects coming up so that students can "see" at a glance what times are coming up that are going to be busier, and put that information together with scheduled outside activities, and come up with a workable plan for getting everything done in a timely manner. The key to good study skills is to keep up with assignments, tests, and projects on a daily basis. Longer projects should be broken down into daily goal that need to be accomplished in order to successfully reach the deadline in a timely manner!

TAKS

In addition to the EC-4 Generalist, 4-8 Generalist, 4-8 Math, and ESL Supplemental certifications, I also have a B.S. in Chemistry. Strong Tutor — Elizabeth tutored our son in math over the phone. She was exceptionally communicative and supportive. It was impressive to listen to her teach and coach over the phone which initially was not something we thought could be done. We highly recommend her to anyone needing 7th grade math tutoring and suspect she's great at other subjects and grades as well. ...
