Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra I students over the past two years and achieved a very high success rate. My teaching methodology is: I give detailed written and/or verbal explanations of problems similar to the student's assigned problems before having the student attempt them independently. Moreover, I let the student assume my role by having him/her demonstrate how to solve a problem as if he/she were demonstrating the process to me (making certain to ask many questions as I progress). At the student's request, I provide post-lesson problems called "Do You Remember" exercises to gauge their recollection and comprehension of the lesson material; many of my previous students loved and appreciated them, as it helped them to better retain the material and greatly improve course performance. Algebra I is a moderately difficult course, but my teaching of it makes for easier and greater understanding, less intimidation, and increased student confidence.

Algebra 2

I have tutored Algebra II students over the past five years and achieved a very high passing rate. My teaching methodology is simple: I give detailed written and/or verbal explanations of problems similar to the student's assigned problems before having the student attempt them independently. Furthermore, I let the student assume the tutor's role by having him/her demonstrate how to solve a problem as if he/she were teaching me the process (making certain to ask many questions along the way). Moreover, at the student's request, I provide post-lesson exercises (I call them "Do You Remember" exercises) to test their recollection of the lesson material; many of my previous students loved and appreciated this, as it helped them to better retain the material and greatly improve course performance. Granted Algebra II is a difficult course, how I teach it makes for easier comprehension, less intimidation, and greater student confidence.

Calculus

I tutor both high school (Pre-AP and Calculus AB; I have not tutored Calculus BC as yet but am confident that I can do so) and college-level calculus (through Calculus III) and have done so for nineteen years. Of all the students who I have taught privately in this subject, all earned passing grades. Moreover, I have experience in preparing students for the AP Calculus examination; I have coached several students to either perfect or near perfect scores on this test. I can also assist with preparation for the CLEP Calculus examination; if you are preparing for this test and would like help in doing so, then please contact me.

Chemistry

I assist primarily with high school chemistry, but I can also help with college-level introductory and general chemistry. Furthermore, I help mostly with the lecture portions of the above courses.

Differential Equations

I have tutored differential equations for many years and still do now and then. Moreover, I have taught in topics from this course in other courses such as Business Calculus I and Business Calculus II. Of all the students I tutored, all earned A's and B's. From these experiences, I feel that I am rather competent in this subject.

Finite Math

I have tutored finite mathematics (i.e., mathematics for business and economics) off-and-on for the past nineteen years. I can handle such topics as linear and quadratic functions, matrices, linear programming, elementary counting methods and probability, and basic statistics (feel free to contact me for further information on the topics I can cover). I tutor these topics in very much the same fashion as I do topics from other mathematics areas. I feel that I am very competent in this subject (most students who I have private-taught in it earned A's and B's) and can provide the best possible assistance.

Geometry

This past year, I private taught a high school student in Pre-AP Geometry for the first time (this was my first formal exposure to geometry in almost three decades) with good success (the student earned a high B). After having researched the course material the summer prior, accessed many online practice worksheets, and preparing the student for some of the course material in advance, I did not find it terribly difficult; I feel that I am relatively competent in it. If you need assistance with the course or have any questions regarding my prior experience, then please feel free to contact me.

Special note: I assist with Pre-AP Geometry only; I cannot assist with AP Geometry.

Pharmacology

I have been tutoring pharmacology since 2004. I have coached numerous pharmacology students and brought them from failing grades to either perfect or near-perfect marks on their dosage calculations examinations. I am not proficient in the theoretical aspect but am well-skilled in the computational aspect. I private-instruct students in pharmacology and am quite comfortable doing so.

Physics

I assist primarily with high school physics (at the Pre-AP and AP levels); however, I can help with college-level (algebra-based) physics (the first semester and most of the second semester). Moreover, I can assist with certain areas of the first and second semesters of university-level (calculus-based) physics. Most importantly, I help mostly with the lecture portions of the aforementioned courses.

Precalculus

I tutor precalculus at the high school and college levels and have done so for many years. My teaching methodology for this course is very similar to that for Algebra II, except the level is more sophisticated. The topics covered are similar to those discussed in second-year algebra and trigonometry courses save for additional topics such as sequences, series, and introductory calculus material being covered. My success rate in this course is rather high; I consider it among my best subjects to tutor.

Probability

I studied probability in my engineering calculus and statistics courses; moreover, I currently tutor in this area and have done so for many years. (See the "Statistics" section of my profile for a complete description of my qualifications.) Additionally, I have taught students (all of who succeeded) who have taken business statistics at the college and university levels. Via these experiences, I am quite comfortable with this topic and greatly competent in it.

Statistics

I currently tutor statistics and have done so since 2006. Even before then, I taught a considerable amount of the subject material (not only in this course but also in courses such as Mathematics for Business and Economics and Business Calculus II); moreover, I received training in the MINITAB software that statistics students sometimes use. Of all the statistics students I have taught, all but one earned A's and B's as final grades. From these perspectives, I have considerable experience with the course material. (Special note: I teach statistics topics from such disciplines as business and sociology. However, I do not specialize in engineering statistics.) Furthermore, students request assistance with statistics using computer software now and then. I can do so via MINITAB and (at times) Excel but not SPSS.

Trigonometry

I tutor trigonometry and have done so for many years. My teaching methodology for this course is very similar to that for pre-calculus (many of the trigonometry topics covered are also very similar). The only difference is that such topics as sequences, series, and conic sections are not covered. I enjoy teaching this course as much as I do pre-calculus; it is among my favorite tutoring subjects. Moreover, my student success rate in the course is rather high. Most of my students who pay careful attention to my explanations, devote the necessary time, and input the necessary work generally earn at least a "B" grade.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
