I am a certified EC-6 dual-language (English and Spanish) teacher in Texas and have taught dual language first grade in Fort Worth ISD from 2011-2013. Both of my classes of 22 students made on average 1.75 years' worth of reading growth within a year, and our class averaged above 80% mastery on all math content.

My favorite part of the day is working one-on-one or in small groups with both struggling students and on-level or gifted students who need enrichment opportunities. I love getting to know my students personally. My desire is not just to show them how successful they can be in school, but show them that learning is fun and achieving academically can bring such a sense of accomplishment!

NOTE: I am also HIGHLY QUALIFIED to tutor Spanish (any level), ESL (any level), or beginners Portuguese. (Language learning is my passion!)

Personal background:
I am currently a full-time student working towards my master's degree in bilingual speech-language pathology at Texas Christian University, expected to graduate in May 2016. While taking courses, I have worked as a private tutor (grades PK-1 and adults) and a literacy tutor for grades K-3 for the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD). While a tutor for FWISD, I was also a full-time student taking prerequisite speech science courses at the University of North Texas (2013-2014). Prior to this, I taught bilingual first grade in FWISD for two years. I was placed to teach in Fort Worth through Teach For America, a highly-selective post-college educational nonprofit that places qualified graduates in high-needs schools across the country. Originally from the western suburbs of Chicago, I attended public schools from Kinder through 12th grade. In high school, I was a National Merit Commended Scholar and member of the National Honor Society, through which I tutored other middle and high school students mostly in English and Spanish. I also achieved passing scores of 3 or 4 on the AP exams in European History, Psychology, Physics, English language, and Calculus AB. I then attended Boston College, where I graduated cum laude with two majors (Communication and Hispanic Studies) and participated in numerous musical groups (marching band, pep band, flute choir, chorale - I love music!).

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher by TEA (Texas Education Association) in the areas of EC-6 (Early Childhood through 6th grade) and bilingual education.

Flute

I have been playing flute for the past 10 years. While in high school, I played in a Youth Symphony Orchestra in Chicago. During my undergraduate education at Boston College, I played in the marching band (piccolo and trombone) and in the flute choir for four years. I am qualified to tutor beginning flute and music basics.

Phonics

I am a certified first grade teacher, qualified to teach phonics in both English and Spanish.

Public Speaking

I was a Communication major at Boston College, with an emphasis in Public Relations. As a part of my major, I took a college-level public speaking course as well as a course in Advanced Public Relations where we held mock press conferences, delivered oral statements and answered questions from "the press" (our classmates). I was also grade level chair this past year, and presented professional development sessions to my colleagues.

Inspiring — Christine has been doing a wonderful job teaching the flute to my daughter. Zoe has gone from wanting to quit band to walking around with her flute practicing. She is very excited each week to get her lesson. Its been a blessing finding Christine! ...
