Greetings! My name is Mari.

I was a tutor throughout my college years. We will take your pace and focus on your expectations. My two passions in life are music and foreign language. I am a composer and aspiring conductor, and I have a sung in choirs for many years. My studies and participation in choir have taken me to Costa Rica, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and across the States. In my singing, I have become accustomed to languages: from German, French, and Italian to Farsi to Danish to Swedish to Russian to Polish to Brazilian Portuguese. I am fluent in Spanish and French, and I have actively studied Portuguese and Swedish.

I can work out of my home or in a public space (library, office, school, or coffee shop). If necessary, I can come to a residence, but that is not my preference.

Composition (Music)

I am a professional composer. My bachelor's and master's degrees are in music composition. I also studied counterpoint, harmony, and analysis in the tradition of Nadia Boulanger in Paris, France for two summers.

I am well versed in engraving software (Finale), instrumentation, orchestration and especially composing for the voice and choir. I play piano and sing. I have been singing in choirs for over 13 consecutive years, and I also conduct. Performances of my music are available online, and scores are available upon request. I have connections to musicians throughout the United States, in France and Scandinavia.

Ear Training

I have tutored students in musicianship and aural skills for four years. I assist students in sightsinging, solfège, dictation, melody, rhythm, meter and harmony. An working knowledge of music theory (clefs, keys, staves, notes, scales, etc.) functions along developing skills for hearing, writing, and performing music.

For sightsinging, I recommend the book Melodia.

French

Merci beaucoup !

Hello! How's it going? I have studied French language for about three years. I went to Paris to study music, but I made friends there with whom I keep in contact. After studying French phonetics in song, I learned how to teach, spelling, and pronunciation to read the language. Practice is always necessary, and I delight in the very opportunity to speak with or write anyone who feels like it. Thank you very much!

General Music

With my degrees in music and my experience in choirs and connection to symphonic musicians, I am prepared to introduce subjects of music appreciation.

The student will come to assess their "depth" of hearing and listening. No one is truly tone-deaf. Music is for everyone and is an participatory activity. Even passive listening requires brain power. Everyone has the capacity to hear music better.

Geography

I am fascinated by the world, its cultures, and its languages. There is so much to learn from other people around the world. Geography will provide a frame of reference and perspective to inform your ideas about other parts of the world.

A knowledge of geography, history, religions, flags and languages is essential to understanding global diversity in all of its forms.

Grammar

Grammar was my favorite part of English class in junior high school. I find that grammar and syntax are the mechanics of any given language. They provide order and justify meaning.

Strong writing is something to which all professionals and intellects aspire. In the age when English language is virtually everywhere, it is advantageous to know right from wrong - even if the intention is to challenge the order of grammar.

Music History

I have taken five years of music history including specialized courses in Romantics, folk and pop influences, opera, German Lieder, orchestral masterworks, and Olivier Messiaen. My knowledge of French tradition is freshest, but I am comfortable to discuss music from all eras, Medieval to contemporary.

Music Theory

My degrees have been in music theory and composition. Beyond the requirements for all music majors, I took classes in tonal analysis, 20th century analysis, counterpoint, score reading and harmony in the French tradition.

With me you will master solfège and the roman numeral system, but also gain a deeper knowledge of modality, tonality, atonality, and centricity. You will also get a handle on phrase and formal analysis and vocabulary pertinent to the subject.

Feel free to ask me any questions. Analysis can be done on many levels but is necessary for all musicians to better understand and verbalize what it is they strive to make. There is an art and history before what you see on the page and what you hear in recordings. Theory is the analysis of such art.

Piano

I am a self-taught pianist, but I took lessons in college for three years. I also have resources to teach in a traditional way with scales and chords. My knowledge of piano repertory is good but not excellent - I am better suited to teach private voice. I am more than comfortable teaching beginner-level piano students.

Portuguese

Eu amo a música brasileira! Faz cinco anos comecei aprender a língua portuguesa. Me ensinei por escutar músicas populares e folclóricas brasileiras e estudar as letras delas.

I love Brazilian music. Five years ago, I began to learn the Portuguese language. I taught myself by listening to Brazilian folk and pop songs and studying their lyrics. Because I am fluent in Spanish, I already understood the grammar, but I had to teach myself the pronunciation and vocabulary. While I was in college, I met students who had already done exchange programs in Brazil, and I formed a Brazilian Portuguese Conversation group with them. I am still learning - but when I meet a Brazilian - I can communicate with them easily.

Sight Singing

I have tutored students in musicianship and aural skills for four years. I assist students in sightsinging, solfège, dictation, melody, rhythm, meter and harmony. An working knowledge of music theory (clefs, keys, staves, notes, scales, etc.) functions along developing skills for hearing, writing, and performing music.

For sightsinging, I recommend the book Melodia.

I am from a Mexican American family, and I have studied Spanish for over twelve years. My first semester in college, the Spanish department invited me to Costa Rica for the month of January to do an intensive class. Since then, I have considered myself fluent in the language. I continued taking Spanish writing, poetry and literature classes, and now I am accustomed to speaking and writing. I can help whomever needs it - any level - and if you want to meet just to practice conversation, I am happy to do so.

Voice (Music)

I have been singing in choirs for over 13 consecutive years. I sang in the Texas All-State Choir for three years, the world-renowned St. Olaf Choir for three years, and the International Orange Chorale of San Francisco for one and a half years. In grad school, I took a semester of vocal pedagogy, taught private voice lessons, and formed and conducted a choir.

My knowledge of vocal repertory is vast, especially for tenor students, including works by Nordic composers. I teach IPA (international phonetic alphabet) for several languages as a tool for pronunciation. I am also fluent in Spanish, French, and Brazilian Portuguese. My students will be at ease singing in foreign languages.

I am comfortable working with beginners but prefer students high school to college age.

Strong writing is something to which all professionals and intellects aspire. In the age when English language is virtually everywhere, it is advantageous to know right from wrong - even if the intention is to challenge the order of grammar.
