Do you need help with Mathematics - Calculus, Precalculus, Algebra, or Geometry, Test Prep - SAT math, ACT math, or GRE math?
I have a B.S. in Mathematics and taught at the high school level for 4 years. As an undergraduate student, I also tutored at UNT's math lab, where I found out that I had a knack for being able to come up with examples and explanations on the fly that would help clarify difficult concepts for students. After teaching those 4 years, I decided to return to school for a Masters of Engineering for a career change. I am currently a structural engineer working on various projects ranging from bridge design and inspection to heavy civil structural design and electrical transmission tower analysis. Engineering gives me a way to apply my skills in new and challenging ways, but I realized after working as a design professional that I missed the pure mathematics side of things!
I love tutoring because I get to see students' "Ah-Ha!" moments so much more frequently than as a teacher! It has also been very fulfilling to help struggling students turn their grades around and achieve success. Even more important to me is being able to give students that "Wow, I can do it!" feeling. If my availability matches yours, I'd love to help!

I am the father of a 3 year old toddler, and am so blessed to be able to give her most of my free time. In addition to parenting, my hobbies include camping, playing video games, and gardening. I also LOVE playing board games (mostly Settlers of Catan and D&D) and just love to laugh in general. Aside from that, I'm a husband to a beautiful wife (of 8 years) and active in my church. Studying in small groups can be very beneficial for struggling students. I'm happy to tutor you and a friend or two for a reduced rate.
Joel has done an awesome job with my daughter in a very short period of time. During their most recent session she exclaimed..."It's so weird to know how to do math now!". I so wish we had found Joel sooner!!
Both my daughter and I are very happy with our math tutor. He really communicates well with the kids. He's also great at communicating with me his observations after each session. It's a good match for us. Extremely pleased.
Now, they're in the second year of tutoring and how great is it that Joel is able to help her with chemistry and algebra? I'm so grateful we were referred to Joel!
I had Joel work with my two daughters, one a college student, and the other preparing to take the SAT exam. Joel spent 2-1/2 hours with them on their first lesson with him, and my oldest daughter felt much more confident for her upcoming college classes. She's already decided she wants Joel to keep working with her as long as she needs the assistance. My youngest daughter benefited by having Joel give her tips on taking the SAT, and she worked problems during her session, and Joel would assist as she ran into road blocks. She too will continue to have Joel work with her to bring her H.S. grade back up to an A! Thanks Joel!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught Algebra II for 2 years at Burleson ISD. I am highly skilled at the subject matter, as well as presenting it in a way that is easy to understand and remember for exams.
This is (by far) my favorite class to tutor. I got to teach AP Calculus AB during my last year as a teacher at Castleberry High School. Hopefully my joy and enthusiasm for the subject will be infectious enough that you begin to love this subject as much as I do!
For this class in particular, I recommend group sessions. If you and a friend or two are struggling, I'll reduce my rates and help everyone at the same time. The benefit of these small group sessions is that many times a friend will ask a question you didn't even realize you had! The drawback, of course, is that you don't get the 1 on 1 attention - if you feel like you have lots of specific questions, it may be better to have a session alone. Either way, I'm sure I can explain the subject matter in a way that's easy for you to understand.
I can help on all sections of the SAT as far as test taking skills are concerned, but my focus on actual tested content is the math portion.
It's actually very easy to improve your scores on the math portion of this test. It just takes a little time, practice, and persistence. If you have the motivation and drive to do well, I promise I can improve your math score.
Before scheduling a tutoring session, I recommend you buy an SAT prep book (like Princeton Review, or something similar) and complete a practice exam in the allotted time. That way, you will 1) have a "baseline" score to be able to see improvement from, and 2) know areas of weakness that we can spend more time on.
I recommend planning on around three or four 90-minute sessions every couple of weeks. This allows you time to study the material yourself between sessions, and a 90-minute session will give us time to cover the material well without being too rushed. Keep in mind, this means you need to start studying for this test at least a couple of months before you plan to take it!
