I am a certified EC-6 dual-language (English and Spanish) teacher in Texas and have taught dual language first grade in Fort Worth ISD for the past two years. Both of my classes of 22 students made on average 1.75 years' worth of reading growth within a year, and our class averaged above 80% mastery on all math content.
My favorite part of the day is working one-on-one or in small groups with both struggling students and on-level or gifted students who need enrichment opportunities. I love getting to know my students personally. My desire is not just to show them how successful they can be in school, but show them that learning is fun and achieving academically can bring such a sense of accomplishment!
NOTE: I am also HIGHLY QUALIFIED to tutor Spanish (any level), ESL (any level), or beginners Portuguese. (Language learning is my passion!)
I have taught in FWISD for the past two years in bilingual first grade, but I have worked with students from all elementary grades. I was placed to teach in Fort Worth through Teach For America, a highly-selective post-college educational nonprofit that places qualified graduates in high-needs schools across the country. Originally from the western suburbs of Chicago, I attended public schools from Kinder through 12th grade. In high school, I was a National Merit Commended Scholar and member of the National Honor Society, through which I tutored other middle and high school students mostly in English and Spanish. I also achieved passing scores of 3 or 4 on the AP exams in European History, Psychology, Physics, English language, and Calculus AB. I then attended Boston College, where I graduated cum laude with two majors (Communication and Hispanic Studies) and participated in numerous musical groups (marching band, pep band, flute choir, chorale - I love music!). I am currently enrolled to take classes in the fall towards a Master's degree in bilingual speech and language pathology at University of North Texas. I also recently received a Fulbright grant to teach English in Brazil starting in February 2014.
