I have 12 years of teaching experience. My special education background makes me uniquely qualified to work with those who have learning difficulties and other disabilities. I have immense patience, creativity and the ability to reach most challenged learners. I believe in teaching towards each students strengths and unique abilities. I can adjust to all types of learning styles. Often I will use manipulatives to teach subjects such as math or reading. For example, I will use actual coins to teach the different uses of money or bears to teach addition or subtraction. I believe in meeting a learner where they are and building on their strengths.
I have a master's degree in education and I am certified to teach grades one through eight in regular education and I can teach kindergarten through twelfth grade in special education. One of my favorite success stories is when I worked with a student who had a learning disability in math and I was finally able to help him grasp multiplication by explaining it in different ways. I used other students to help explain it to him and also broke it down into very specific steps so he could better understand the concept.
Finally after a lot of perseverance, the student was able to multiply all on his own. Seeing his expression when he finally understood was amazing. It is moments like these that drive me to be an educator.
