In my alternative certification program I studied various types of learning disabilities and their corresponding challenges they present to students (i.e. ADD/ADHD and how it affects cognitive abilities).
Additionally I have 10+ years experience working specifically with children who have ADD/ADHD (I have two children, each with ADHD/ADD) and I assisted the majority of former tutor students with the challenges associated with ADD/ADHD such as focus and distractability difficulties, and the development of time management, organization, pro-activeness and goal-setting skills.
I have several years experience teaching Bible studies and AWANAS for children ages 5-14. As a staff member of the children's ministry with two churches over the past fifteen years, I love teaching children about God, His Word and His creation. My curriculum covers character Scripture memorization, character development, and the practical application of God's Word. I also cover who God is and the various ways in which He reveals Himself to us.
As I earned my B.S. in Multi-disciplinary Studies (Major Education, and Minors Counseling, Computer Science) I studied quite a bit about personalities, how to ascertain interests, learning styles and have a particular interest in helping others through career development. Having also worked in corporate environments for the last 15 years and privately owned and operated a company which provided tutoring services for students based on learning preferences, styles and personal interests. The assessment tools used can be utilized and very effective for students of any age and area very helpful in career development as well.
Selecting a college and lifelong career can certainly be daunting. In my B.S. in Multidisciplinary Studies (emphasis in Counseling), I believe students need help in identifying just exactly which career direction inspires, motivates and leads them as successful, positive and contributing members of society. It is crucial that students first know themselves and have a firm understanding of who they are as individuals, their strengths, weaknesses, natural learning tendencies and an idea of their overall purpose. I have received training in identifying the various assessment tools used to ascertain student's personality, IQ, interests, etc.
I have supported students with dyslexia and other special needs since 2005. Using varied methodologies such as the Irlen color overlays, I assist with a variety of reading, learning and attention problems. Many originate from a sensitivity to light and black/white contrast and cognitive functionality issues. Each special needs student is unique! After identifying each dyslexic student's correct overlay color performance is improved in brain functionality and reduced eye strain thus improving reading fluency and comprehension.
I love teaching elementary age students! Seeing the light in a student's eyes with the look of sudden recognition in their countenance is priceless! For the past nine years I've taught students from pre-K to 6th grade in all subjects (including study skills).
In this stage of development it is crucial for students to develop a positive outlook of learning and form effective study skills. Positive habits established now will make parents' jobs and student's lives so much easier in high school, college and years to come. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Multi-Disciplinary Studies (Dbl Major in Education, Counseling and Minor in Computer Science).
For the past ten years I've taught students from Pre-K to 9th grade as a generalist (all subjects, inclusive of Mathematics).
In this stage of development having a good foundation in Mathematics (multiplication, fractions, pre-algebra) is crucial to understanding the more difficult concepts to be introduced in the coming years such as algebra, geometry, logic and statistics.
Initially I studied the basics of nutrition and its effect on cognitive functionality and health out of necessity. As a teacher who supports special needs children (and a parent with two myself) I have considerable experience studying how cognitive functionality is enhanced through diet, physical exercise, vitamin supplements and the lessening of brain over-stimulation. For example, the ADD/ADHD brain processes information differently, requiring less processed sugars, flours and needing more Omega 3 fatty oils and protein. This aids by naturally enhancing focus abilities, lessens distractability and maximizes cognitive functionality in general.
During my ten years of teaching, although I've supported students of all ages, I specialize in working with pre-k to 6th graders. I love working with those students who struggle in emergent reading because I use various fun and age-appropriate teaching strategies that encourage letter and word recognition, a solid foundation for reading fluency is developed, and a lifelong love of learning is created.
Having a good understanding of pre-algebra is necessary in order to do well in higher levels of mathematics. I have several years' experience teaching students pre-algebraic concepts which usually introduced in 5th grade. A few of the basic concepts include using properties of multiplication, solving for variables, evaluating expressions involving decimals, fractions and mixed numbers, writing expressions and working with exponents.
Having a good foundation in Reading is essential for students to be successful. Fluency and comprehension quite often are areas where students struggle as they are developing emergent reading skills. Once the student improves they feel more confident of their abilities, learning becomes less tedious and more enjoyable.
As part of my academic content pursuant to my undergraduate degree, I studied the different learning styles and the modalities dominant in each. I feel that I have a great handle on what type of activities a student would need to perform. For example, if a parent had a preferred visual learning style, and was encouraging the child to learn how he learns, there is a good chance if the child is kinesthetic, that he would have tremendous difficulty absorbing the lesson content. I teach with a differentiated strategy that identifies the student's preference and offers lesson activities that cater to that modality.
As a former competitive diver and swimmer, I know first hand how swimming can positively influence a person's character, and confidence level - not to mention obvious physical benefits. I'm experienced in swimming instruction with elementary age children, completed water safety instruction and first aid certification. Swimming strokes included are freestyle, backstroke, sidestroke and breaststroke. I coach with praise and encouragement at each step, reminding them to never give up! Confidence, tenaciousness, and endurance are a few intrinsic benefits that come from sports participation. The thrill of reaching a long-awaited goal resulting from being focused, disciplined and committed prepares a child for the similar challenges that come later in life. :)
I've taught TAKS test preparation for the past four years for elementary age students in all subjects. This also includes study skills, focus development exercises, goal setting and test anxiety strategies.
