I've always had a passion for math, and I enjoy helping others learn and work through challenges. My favorite subject to teach is Algebra 1 and 2. I am currently pursuing my teaching certification through the UTeach Dallas program, which includes both intense coursework and student teaching in math classrooms. I am very patient and easy-going, and can adapt to a variety of learning styles. In tutoring math, I walk through problems systematically and reinforce the fundamental concepts that the student can apply to similar problems. I prefer regular sessions so that I can observe a student's learning style and adapt accordingly. I believe it is important to build a relationship with the student first because they say "no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care." I have always worked very hard in my courses, and I expect my students to do the same.
I graduated from The University of Texas at Dallas with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a specialization in Statistics in May 2014. My cumulative undergrad GPA was 3.80. I completed advanced math courses in high school, culminating with AP Calculus and AP Statistics. I achieved a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam and a 4 on the AP Statistics exam. During my time in college, I completed various upper level courses in math including Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Theoretical Concepts of Calculus, Abstract Algebra, Mathematical Analysis, Probability, Stochastic Processes, Numerical Analysis, and Complex Variables. I have tutored my younger siblings and friends in math for years, and I love seeing others succeed.
A little more about me: I have lived in Houston, Dallas, and Charlotte, NC. My parents homeschooled me from pre-K through the seventh grade. Then I attended public school at Downing Middle School and Marcus High School in Flower Mound, TX. For many years, I taught children's Sunday school at my church. I played the flute competitively for 6 years and now enjoy it as a hobby.
Note: I am currently student teaching Algebra 2 at Marcus High School, so I don't have much availability for taking on private students until May, but please never hesitate to send me an email! Katie has made a huge difference in my daughter's 10th grade Geometry course. She has been available for my daughter on the same day that she receives a text from her. She has explained and demonstrated to her in a way that she can grasp and understand the concept. Katie has given my daughter confidence in her Geometry work and her grades have improved tremendously. It’s strange how missing or not understanding a few fundamentals in geometry can cause grades to deteriorate and a few simple explanations with examples and instructions can change the entire prospective from the student's point of view. Thanks Katie! Your assistance tutoring my daughter has made a huge difference in her school work. You are indeed a one of a kind, special tutor and we will always be grateful that our paths crossed!
Katie is very patient and continues to keep my son engaged. Presenting math in different ways to further his understanding!
My son has been working with Katie for several weeks now and I am continually impressed with her patience and insight, as well as my son's progress. She has a strong understanding of getting him to "connect" with the work and sticks with it to help him understand the principles and not just get the work done. We'll continue to seek her services and strongly recommend her to other students!
Katie has been tutoring my 8th grade son in math (Algebra I) since February and we have seen a big improvement in his grades. She has a great personality along with her subject matter expertise and relates very well to kids my son's age. She put him at ease right away, which made it much easier for him to concentrate on getting better.
Katie is also very flexible (we have very busy weekends and she has been very accommodating and has worked with us each weekend to find a good time for our sessions). We are extremely thrilled with her and give her our highest recommendation.
Katie is a very patient tutor. She finds a way to connect with my daughter and to explain math concepts in a fun way!
Katie was so patient and helpful. It made my night to hear the magical words from my daughter after her session: "I feel so much more prepared for my test!"
Love Katie! And so does my grand daughter! She is easy to reach by text and always responds quickly and is on time for appointments. She has been a huge help!
Katie has displayed great patience and encouragement for my son as he has gained better understanding of math through her approach to teaching. I greatly appreciate her consistency and commitment towards helping my son grow in his understanding of higher level math. I am indeed satisfied with Katie's math proficiency and feedback after each session. She is a wonderful tutor!
Katie has really made the connection with our student and the grades and progress are the proof. Thanks so much Katie you rock in every way!!
Katie W. is like having a very smart friend who is very good at math and can explain concepts in a way that you can understand and hold on to. GREAT at filling in the holes in your math brain!
I would highly recommend Katie as a tutor for a variety of reasons. She has the unique ability to relate to students and provide motivation and encouragement whether they be at the elementary school level or pursuing studies in graduate school. Her mathematical expertise in congruency with her ability to explain difficult material makes her the ideal tutor for individuals struggling with highschool or college math, SAT preparation, as well as GRE preparation. Katie is a kind and caring instructor with exceptional teaching skills.
We have been using Katie for 6 weeks and love her. I homeschool and needed someone who understood home schoolers and also could fill in where I have not been able to work with my daughter. Katie is very personable, patient and thoughtful. She listens to my daughter's needs and really teaches her in a way that my daughter understands. I strongly recommend Katie as a math tutor if your child is frustrated and crying and feeling like math does not make any sense. She is teaching algebra to my daughter and my daughter is finally understanding her math.
I needed a tutor to help my daughter survive the Connected Math years in Plano ISD. After just a couple of sessions with Katie my daughter felt more confident in her math skills and it is already reflecting in her work. My daughters teacher has also noticed an improvement. Katie gives my daughter positive feedback and takes her time explaining concepts my daughter struggles with.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took Pre-AP Algebra 1 in 8th grade and was recognized for outstanding performance and success. The Summit Club of Flower Mound also awarded me for academic excellence in mathematics.
Personally, this is my favorite subject to teach.
During my sophomore year of high school, I was awarded a certificate of achievement for outstanding performance and success in Pre-AP Algebra 2.
I am currently student-teaching Algebra 2 at a high school, so this material is very fresh in my mind!
I have taken Calculus I, II, and III in college, but I am only comfortable teaching basic limits, derivatives, and integrals.
I was homeschooled for all of elementary school and I have a strong foundation in elementary math.
I was recognized for outstanding performance and success in 7th grade Pre-AP Math at Downing Middle School.
I have taken a course in probability and I understand the basic ideas enough to reason my way through most problems.
