I've always had a passion for math, and I enjoy helping others learn and work through challenges. My favorite subject to teach is Algebra 1 and 2. I am currently pursuing my teaching certification through the UTeach Dallas program, which includes both intense coursework and student teaching in math classrooms. I am very patient and easy-going, and can adapt to a variety of learning styles. In tutoring math, I walk through problems systematically and reinforce the fundamental concepts that the student can apply to similar problems. I prefer regular sessions so that I can observe a student's learning style and adapt accordingly. I believe it is important to build a relationship with the student first because they say "no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care." I have always worked very hard in my courses, and I expect my students to do the same.

I graduated from The University of Texas at Dallas with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 2014. My cumulative undergrad GPA was 3.80. I completed advanced math courses in high school, culminating with AP Calculus and AP Statistics. I achieved a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam and a 4 on the AP Statistics exam. During my time in college, I completed various courses in math including Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Theoretical Concepts of Calculus, Abstract Algebra, Mathematical Analysis, Probability, Stochastic Processes, Numerical Analysis, and Complex Variables. I have tutored my younger siblings and friends in math for years, and I love seeing others succeed.

A little more about me: I have lived in Houston, Dallas, and Charlotte, NC. My parents home schooled me through the seventh grade. Then I attended public school at Downing Middle School and Marcus High School in Flower Mound, TX. For many years, I taught children's Sunday school at my church. I played the flute competitively for 6 years and now enjoy it as a hobby. I'm also a runner, constantly trying to improve!

I am currently working as a tutor in the Math Lab at North Central Texas College and also as an SAT Math tutor at The Tutoring Center, so I don't have much availability for taking private students right now.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have taken the ACT twice, with a top score of 29 on the math portion.

Algebra 1

I took Pre-AP Algebra 1 in 8th grade and was recognized for outstanding performance and success. The Summit Club of Flower Mound also awarded me for academic excellence in mathematics.

Personally, this is my favorite subject to teach.

Algebra 2

During my sophomore year of high school, I was awarded a certificate of achievement for outstanding performance and success in Pre-AP Algebra 2.

Calculus

I have taken Calculus I, II, and III in college, but I am only comfortable teaching basic limits, derivatives, and integrals.

Elementary Math

I was homeschooled for all of elementary school and I have a strong foundation in elementary math.

Geometry

I took a college geometry class last year and I am comfortable with the level of geometry on the SAT/ACT tests.

Prealgebra

I was recognized for outstanding performance and success in 7th grade Pre-AP Math at Downing Middle School.

Probability

I have taken a course in probability and I understand the basic ideas enough to reason my way through most problems.

SAT Math

I took the SAT three times in high school, achieving a 700 on the math section more than once.

You can solve this problem two different ways. Method 1: Factoring First move evething to one side. 3a^2 - 2a - 5 = 0 Then find factors of the first and last term (3 and 5) that add to be -2. So we have (3a-5)(a+1) = 0 Set 3a-5=0 and a+1=0 Then we see that a=5/3 or a=-1 Method 2: Quadratic Equation x...

Great tutor - very excited we found her — Katie has been tutoring my 8th grade son in math (Algebra I) since February and we have seen a big improvement in his grades. She has a great personality along with her subject matter expertise and relates very well to kids my son's age. She put him at ease right away, which made it much easier for him to concentrate on getting better. Katie is also very flexible (we have very busy weekends and ...
