In the area of English, many students want to improve their literacy or comprehension of English writings. English has many facets, some of which are understanding the components of stories, deciphering an author's intentions, and correctly identifying the tone and voice of a particular piece of literature. Practice in these areas of English, as well as in general Language Arts in the lower grades, can dramatically increase the success and joy of students in this area.
I have international TESOL certification. I also have a master's degree in TESOL. I also have 6 years experience overseas teaching ESL, and 6 additional years of teaching ESL at colleges and with individuals of all ages here in the States.
Grammar doesn't have to be hard and boring! It is the vehicle by which we all must communicate, so learning the rules of grammar is very important. However, it is hard to learn when the content seems difficult or uninteresting. I try to bring the grammar to life by applying rules learned to fun and practical topics, and by finding authentic use of the grammar so that the students can see its relevance in every day life.
I have taught handwriting to kindergarteners and elementary students for years in school and private settings. Currently, as a college instructor of ESL grammar and writing, I often correct handwriting in older students who have learned to write letters incorrectly. Clear and proper handwriting is still an essential skill for students.
Knowing the basics of PowerPoint is essential for most presentations. With only a few lessons, students can learn how to make the most appealing and effective PowerPoint show for work, school or for family and friends.
Students who are unaware of how to use Microsoft Word are missing out on a significant tool. I can help students learn the basics of Microsoft Word which will enhance any written reports for work, school or personal use.
I taught phonics every day for a year to kindergarteners in South Korea at a language institute, and I continue to teach phonics in my ESL college classes. Phonics information was also contained in my MA-TESOL courses.
Native and non-native speakers alike need to have their writing proofread from time to time. I can proofread and teach basic proofreading skills so that students minimize costly mistakes in writing. Such mistakes, if not found and corrected, can cost people jobs or promotions, and can impair communication. Therefore, proofreading skills are essential.
A student's study skills toolkit should include 1) ways to obtain a mastery level understanding that goes beyond surface repetition of facts, 2) methods to retain knowledge learned, and effective test-taking strategies. I enjoy sharing the proven, fast, and fun techniques with students or anyone who needs to learn and remember new information, whether it be in the field of ESL or any other course work or business endeavors. I have taught at the university and college level and have been involved in promoting effective study skills for more than 10 years. I also keep my knowledge current on the issue of study skills with videos and books by experts on the subject.
Students who are planning to take the TOEFL test must know high level vocabulary at the production level, and must be able to write, listen and read well. There are many resources available for such students, but the most successful students are those who have a native English speaker teacher to study with individually.
Vocabulary is the cornerstone of language learning. High level vocabulary has also been found through an extensive research project to be the most common factor among the most successful people in more than 30 different fields. Whether a person is a native English speaker or a not, he or she will benefit from increasing his or her word reservoir. Not all techniques to learning vocabulary are equally effective; some lead to frustration, and some lead to success. I enjoy teaching my students great vocabulary learning techniques and watching them use higher level vocabulary.
Writing should be a joy, not a dreaded burden. With the right tutor, a student can learn how to access the wealth of ideas in her mind and bring them to life on paper. With so many settings where writing is used in today's world (school, work, and social arenas), it is an essential skill. I enjoy teaching writing very much and my students learn how to make their writings meaningful and memorable.
Writing types tutored: TSI, Compass, Accuplacer, business, and academic essays.
