Hello,

I am a native English speaker from Texas. I also know basic Spanish and Korean. I am friendly and professional and am well-liked by children and adults. I spent almost 6 years in South Korea teaching at a Christian university and language institute there.

While overseas, I obtained TESOL certification.

My latest endeavor, a Christian novel, has just been published on Amazon and Smashbooks as of August 14, 2012.

Last year I completed my master's degree in TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language to Speakers of Other Languages) and currently, I am employed as a college ESL instructor.

I also have experience teaching Accent Reduction classes, U.S. citizenship classes, U.S. driver's license test preparation, and all types of writing.

Classes are available for the very young and/or beginners to advanced or business level needs. Classes are available for individuals or groups via in-home/in-office or online settings.

Vocabulary is the cornerstone of language learning. Grammar

Grammar doesn't have to be hard and boring! It is the vehicle by which we all must communicate, so learning the rules of grammar is very important. However, it is hard to learn when the content seems difficult or uninteresting. I try to bring the grammar to life by applying rules learned to fun and practical topics, and by finding authentic use of the grammar so that the students can see its relevance in every day life.

Microsoft Word

Students who are unaware of how to use Microsoft Word are missing out on a significant tool. I can help students learn the basics of Microsoft Word which will enhance any written reports for work, school or personal use.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Knowing the basics of PowerPoint is essential for most presentations. With only a few lessons, students can learn how to make the most appealing and effective PowerPoint show for work, school or for family and friends.

Writing

Writing should be a joy, not a dreaded burden. With the right tutor, a student can learn how to access the wealth of ideas in her mind and bring them to life on paper. With so many settings where writing is used in today's world (school, work, and social arenas), it is an essential skill. I enjoy teaching writing very much and my students learn how to make their writings meaningful and memorable.

English

In the area of English, many students want to improve their literacy or comprehension of English writings. English has many facets, some of which are understanding the components of stories, deciphering an author's intentions, and correctly identifying the tone and voice of a particular piece of literature. Practice in these areas of English, as well as in general Language Arts in the lower grades, can dramatically increase the success and joy of students in this area.

Proofreading

Native and non-native speakers alike need to have their writing proofread from time to time. I can proofread and teach basic proofreading skills so that students minimize costly mistakes in writing. Such mistakes, if not found and corrected, can cost people jobs or promotions, and can impair communication. Therefore, proofreading skills are essential.

SAT Writing

SAT writing success comes only with guided practice. There are time limitations, formats, and decisions that must be well-supported in such an essay. The best SAT essays also include varied sentence structure and high level vocabulary. I enjoy helping students improve their chances for success in SAT writing.

Phonics

I taught phonics every day for a year to kindergarteners in South Korea at a language institute, and I continue to teach phonics in my ESL college classes. Phonics information was also contained in my MA-TESOL courses.

Korean

I lived in South Korea for six years during which time I took many classes, studied many books and learned how to speak, read and write Korean. I also have Korean family members and friends with whom I speak or write Korean to communicate.

ESL/ESOL

I have international TESOL certification. I also have a master's degree in TESOL. I also have 6 years experience overseas teaching ESL, and 4 additional years of teaching ESL at colleges here in the States.
