I have been teaching in colleges in Africa for more than 20 years. I have a PhD in linguistics and understand cross-cultural communication; however, I am a mother and grandmother as well, so I have a lot of experience relating to children. In Africa I have typically taught Bible and theology courses, but in the U.S., I teach English as a Second Languages, as well as linguistics courses.
I studied linguistics at the University of Texas at Arlington and earned both an M.A. and a PhD there. My PhD coursework included concentrations in English and phonology. During my graduate studies, I taught as a graduate teaching assistant in English as a Second Language, and I also taught at various community colleges and continuing education programs in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. At Tarrant County College (in Hurst), I taught an academic course in English for students who did not speak English as a native language. At North Lake College (Irving), I taught continuing education English classes.
I also lived in Hollywood, Florida, for a year and there I taught English as a second language to their students. I have taught in the Intensive English Program at Missouri State University; the Intensive English Program is directed towards international students who want to attend an American University but have been unable to pass the TOEFL test. I also lived in Salem, Oregon, for a year and taught there at Chemeketa Community College, both in the continuing education program and in their academic program. The students in the continuing education program were immigrants who wanted to improve their command of English so as to improve their economic potential. The students in the academic program were studying other courses at the college, but still needed to improve their writing, speaking, and reading skills.
In a classroom setting, I teach students in small groups, because I have found that collaborative learning is more effective than drill or individual study, especially when the topic of study is a language. I always center lessons around the students; long ago, a wise teacher once told me, "Don't teach the lesson, teach the student."
Currently teaching GED classes at a local college.
