Hello there! I'm Carlos. Let me tell you a little bit about my education, experience, and tutoring philosophy.

NOTE: If my rates are too expensive, let me know and I'll be glad to work something out with you.

I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) with a dual degree--a bachelor's in English and American literature and a bachelor's in computer science, with minors in Spanish, religious studies, and mathematics--and a 4.0 GPA for both majors and a cumulative GPA of 3.92. I have been exposed to and have a good grasp of many diverse subjects such as English and Spanish composition and grammar, business writing, editing, rhetoric, physics, calculus, and much more! I am also bilingual in English and Spanish.

I was a writing tutor at the UTEP University Writing Center for over two years, and was fortunate enough to win the Tutor of the Year award for 2011-2012. I've helped students (individually and in groups) with every stage of the writing process and with presentations, conducting research, resumes, letters, personal statements, theses, dissertations, and assignments from virtually every academic field. I'm very familiar with formatting styles (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) and have helped many ESOL students write in standard English. Additionally, I've have given lectures on grammar and composition to college freshmen and do online tutoring as well.

As for my tutoring method, I try to be quick but thorough, emphasize both theory and practice, and use a personalized approach for each student. Normally my sessions are about an hour, although it depends on how much help the student requires. I do recognize that each student has different needs, so I adapt my methods to match my student. I also tend to use a laptop, so an Internet connection is often very helpful, particularly for directing students to relevant resources. I walk students through with whatever they need help on, step by step if necessary, making sure that they understand everything to bring them one step closer to mastery. I try to make sure that students have a solid conceptual grasp of the theory behind the subject in addition to teaching them the best possible practice. My ultimate goal is for students to understand the subject well enough so that they no longer need my help.

So whether you need help with basic or advanced math, physics, reading, writing, English, ESL, or any other subject I've listed, fret not--I can assist you!

In addition, if you need help with any kind of editing or formatting, I took a document design class and have helped many students revise, edit, and proofread theses, dissertations, and other publications, so don't hesitate to contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I'm currently a UTEP English/writing tutor and am majoring in English & American literature, so I am very familiar with grammar and composition.

Algebra 1

As a computer science major, I have taken several advanced math courses, including Calculus I, Calculus II, Numerical Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Physics (Mechanics, Fields & Waves), Astronomy, and Matrix Algebra. Most of these require a good knowledge of algebra, so I am more than qualified to help you!

Bible Studies

I've been studying the Bible almost every day--one of my favorite things to do!--for over 5 years to find out what it says about everything and to develop a Christian worldview. I've also led small Bible studies before on the New Testament, and have read many Christian authors that have helped me understand the Bible better. In addition, I've listened to hundreds of sermons, messages, and lectures. Furthermore, I have a minor in Religious Studies; have taken Greek and Latin; and have studied textual criticism and different Bible versions, Church history, and the historic creeds and confessions, so I'm familiar with theological terminology and know how the Bible relates to other religious traditions both within and without Christianity.

Computer Science

I am a computer science major, so I'm familiar with both procedural and object-oriented programming. I've used Java extensively and have also worked with C, Verilog, PHP, SQL, Python, and Matlab. I've taken the following courses at UTEP:

-Intro to Computer Science
-Elementary Data Structures/Algorithms
-Digital Systems Design I
-Data Structures/Algorithms
-Advanced Object-Oriented Programming
-Theory of Computation (Automata, etc.)
-Computer Architecture I (Comp Org/Design)
-Database Management

Discrete Math

I've taken Discrete Mathematics at UTEP and received an A. Since I'm a computer science major, I've also had to apply many concepts and algorithms from discrete math to my programs, including graphs, trees, Euler paths/circuits, Dijkstra's algorithm, Kruskal's algorithm, Prim's algorithm, breadth-first and depth-first search algorithms, and more.

Java

As a UTEP computer science major, I've been using Java for almost all of my classes. I'm very familiar with Java and with object-oriented programming in general. I've also taken the following courses using Java:

-Intro to Computer Science
-Elementary Data Structures/Algorithms
-Data Structures/Algorithms
-Advanced Object-Oriented Programming
-Database Management

Religion

I've been studying philosophy, theology, religion, the Bible, and church history almost every day for over five years (as a hobby!). I have a minor in religious studies from UTEP, which consists of the following courses:

Humanities: Backgrounds & Foundations;
Major World Religions;
Intro to Religious Studies;
Gender & Religion;
Philosophy of Religion; and
Ethics.

I've studied many religious traditions and texts, including several Bible versions, the Catholic Magisterium, the Book of Mormon, the Koran, the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Bhagavad Gita, Homer's Illiad and Odyssey, Hesiod's Theogony, and more. I've also taken Greek and Latin, so I'm very familiar with theological terminology, and have listened to free online course lectures from seminaries and organizations such as Reformed Theological Seminary and the Trinity Foundation.

Additionally, as a literature major I took several literature classes that focused heavily on religion:

Chaucer,
Milton,
Spenser,
Cervantes,
Medieval British and Spanish Literature,
Native American Literature,
Early American Literature, and
16th-century British Prose & Poetry.

Writing

Writing is my forte! I have been a writing tutor at the UTEP University Writing Center for over two years. I've helped many students with every stage of the writing process (pre-writing, revising, editing, proofreading), with formatting styles (MLA, APA, Chicago, business, etc.), and with papers from every academic field, including theses, dissertations, and publications. Additionally, I am an English & American literature major with a 4.0 GPA.
