My name is Jan and I have worked in the public school system for 18 years. I work with children with behavior problems and at risk students. I love the challenge of helping children succeed not only academically but also in learning to control their behaviors that cause problems for them in school. Many of these students have ADD or ADHD. I also work with several children that are under the autism spectrum. The most important thing I have learned is that not all children learn the same way. I try many different methods until I find one that works for a student. Many times students are made to feel stupid if they aren't successful in the classroom. I love to see the pride they feel when they realize they can be successful! I would love to work with your child and help them realize their full potential and become the best they can be!

ADD/ADHD

I have an extensive amount of experience working with students with ADD/ADHD. Some of my strategies include shortening assignments or breaking them up so the student doesn't become frustrated before finishing. I look at each child individually and develop a plan that works best for them.

Aspergers

I work with many Aspergers children and help them with social skills as well as skills that help them reach success in the classroom. Children with Aspergers have special needs that many people don't understand. I have attended several workshops to learn many different strategies that help them. I love the challenge of helping them reach their full potential.

Elementary (K-6th)

I work daily with elementary age students. I help them with reading, math, writing, social studies and science. I help the younger students with phonics. I also work with them on organization.

Phonics

I work daily with students on their phonics. I have used the Johnny Can Spell program as well as the Saxon phonics program.

Special Needs

For the past 18 years I have worked with students with special needs. I mainly work with children on the Autism spectrum, and children with behavior issues.

Study Skills

Part of my job as a behavior specialist is to help students learn good study habits so they can become more independent. We work on organization, and setting goals that will help them succeed in the classroom. I also work with them on developing skills that help them become independent. This is very important as they get older so they can learn what helps them the most without depending on another individual. Each child learns differently and they need to recognize that and learn what helps them the most.
