The student will be taught anything (and maybe everything) about the English language and how it is used academically and socially. This may include anything from grammar foundations to high-level literature. This broad subject can encompass all areas of study with the English language.
This subject is for students who are learning English as their second (or possibly 3rd, 4th, etc.) language. From beginner to advanced, students will be able to use English in social and academic situations, as I adjust the curriculum to meet their specific goals and needs.
Students will learn how to analyze and interpret (read, write, and speak about) literature from basic to advanced levels. This also includes metacognition and philosophical knowledge.
This subject teaches how to look at various types of written material, understanding the grammar, structure, and content of texts.
I have been teaching high school English for four years, helping students daily with the rigorous material that would be present in the PSAT. I am competent in math, though it is not my strongest subject. I tell students this so that they are aware. While tutoring the past few years, many of my students have already requested my help with their PSAT and SAT tests. I have helped them numerous times get the points they desire.
Students will learn reading strategies, comprehension skills, and the ability to read more accurately and efficiently. Another goal of this course is to teach students how to find something they love to read, and to learn how to love reading in general.
I am a high school English teacher and spend much of my time teaching students how to prepare for tests such as the SAT. With my daily teaching of vocabulary and reading/writing skills, I am able to help one understand what is needed for a high-stakes test that requires the same skills. Many of my students this year have already received scores ranking them in the top 95% of their graduating class in PSAT reading (in the nation).
Students will learn the foundations of English vocabulary, from the roots to prefixes and suffixes, understanding how words are formed, spelled, and pronounced in English. Students will attain a higher level of vocabulary, and will be able to speak, read, write, and listen to words at an advanced academic level.
Students will learn how to write for a variety of audiences and purposes, including the use of appropriate structure, language, and citation, when necessary. In writing, other areas of the language will be stressed as well, such as grammar, vocabulary, and a general understanding of the topic discussed.
