Welcome to my tutoring hub. My name is Allen, and I’m a jack-of-all-trades kinda guy with a longstanding passion for reading and writing. I studied English, communication studies, and psychology at Southwestern University and later completed my graduate degree in media studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
When I’m not battling evil sentence structures or fretting about all that educational debt I’ve amassed, you can find me in the kitchen chopping sundry items just like Jacque Pepin taught me or buried in the Sword of Truth series. Yes, apparently I’ve a fascination with sharp things. And rare persons. In addition to cooking and reading, I love coffee, psych books, manual transmissions, hiking, and social gaming.
My teaching approach always starts with getting to know each student on an individual basis with a focus on two-way communication and mutual respect. I believe that in order for a teacher to be most effective, they must begin by listening to their students. We'll discuss your needs and goals, assess where you're currently at, then tailor lessons to your individual learning styles and personality. The most important thing to remember is that you're in charge. Learning sessions should be about the student, not the tutor. Expect ZERO condescension, belligerence, or other authoritative-style teaching habits.
Once we've talked about your goals and the best way of reaching them, we'll work through the material together with an emphasis on critical thinking skills that will take you beyond simple rote memorization so you will also be able to understand, analyze, and reflect on whatever it is you're wanting to tackle. My primary concern throughout all of this is to make sure I'm helping you achieve your goals in the easiest, clearest, most practical manner possible. This also means I'm not afraid to put in the extra time necessary in between sessions to make sure lesson times are fun, smooth, and productive. ESL students are also very welcome; I promise we'll get you past the tyrannical grips of the 'grammar only approach' to learning English and other silly teaching methods such as memorizing "hamburger" and "chair" vocabulary for four months.
I'm offering tutoring services to serious students needing help with a variety of English and communication studies related topics including: grammar, vocabulary, composition, academic writing, reading comprehension, proofreading and editing, critical analysis, literature, communication/media theory, work & study habits, term papers, research reports, and case studies.
I have 9+ years' experience as a high school and college student tutor, freelance journalist and writer, newspaper editor, and academically successful student. In addition, I've done everything from chairing committees to teaching workshops on grammar and publishing software.
Lastly, some of the less interesting stuff: credentials, qualifications, and other shiny things that might impress you. I've attended some of the most rigorous academic institutions in the nation. My academic merits include Student of the Year awards, numerous semesters on a Dean's List, the Southwestern University Presidential Scholar academic excellence award, and, most recently, a 3.95 GPA with degree-related graduate coursework, 3.85 overall. How much does this matter? Probably not much, as grades and awards don't inherently make a great teacher, but it does show you a little bit about my own academic focus and motivations. Either way, l look forward to earning your respect and appreciation through my teaching, not past accomplishments.
Talk to you soon!
