I am Ernesto, a graduate student with degrees from MIT and the University of Texas at Austin. I love tutoring because every student is unique and therefore has a unique set of skills and challenges. Showing them that they have the power to achieve their potential is incredibly rewarding. I have taught and tutored students for more than a decade. As a high school student, I tutored fellow high school students in geometry
2 and Spanish
. In college, I tutored middle school children in algebra and science
through a program started by my university. During summer breaks, I designed and taught a curriculum of algebra and geometry for struggling middle school students in my hometown.
As a graduate student, I have focused my energy on helping undergrads learn introductory physical anthropology
and cultural anthropology. This includes a lot of one-on-one help with essays, projects and problem sets, and understanding behavioral ecology
, primate morphology, and evolution, among many other subjects in anthropology. For academic material reviews, I try to avoid teaching towards any particular test because this approach leads students to depend on a certain format for problems. I focus on problem solving rather than rote memorization, because by building up a student's ability to think critically, he or she will be able to approach new problems with confidence and efficiency.
I have a lot of experience with test prep for the PSAT
, and GRE
. I have myself taken the PSAT to become a National Merit Scholar, scoring in the top 1% of all high school students, and scored above the 90th percentile on my SAT, ACT, and SAT IIs. I have organized GRE study groups for fellow undergrads. As a result, all of the students in our study groups were accepted into graduate school, and I personally scored in the 86th percentile in math
and 94th percentile in verbal.
In preparing for an academic entrance exam, I start by assessing the individual student's aptitude for the content of the exam. I then focus on building up the student's knowledge of the fundamental kinds of problems they will be expected to know, followed by improving their accuracy and quickness at answering the kinds of questions they are weakest with. Finally, it is imperative for students to practice exams under the same conditions as they will have when they take the real exam.
