Studying abroad in Japan, I met many Japanese students who wanted to learn English about as much—if not more—than I wanted to learn Japanese, and living in an environment where everyone is so hungry for knowledge has been an incredibly formative element in my current drive to tutor.

I've tutored writing, English, and Japanese for about a year now, but even before that I loved helping friends and relatives edit their essays and papers so their real voice could come out. I've also got an extensive background in creative writing, expository essay writing, and literary criticism, so I can help with any literary or response-heavy classes.

As a tutor, I believe in a continual dialectic between tutor and tutee, so I encourage plenty of questions and feedback. I have a twenty-four hour cancellation policy and will travel to you to hold lessons. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you with your studies!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Japanese

I've studied Japanese for five years, from beginning grammar to intermediate grammar and writing. I also have experience tutoring beginning Japanese grammar.

Theatre

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre from Austin College. I studied acting technique as well as script analysis. I have also researched a number of topics in the performing arts (e.g., costume design, improv technique, stand-up comedy, Japanese kabuki, etc.) as part of high school and college courses.

Writing

I have tutored extensively both at the high school and college level. I have experience tutoring English, literature, essay writing, grammar, citation, and research paper writing strategies.
