I specialize in teaching Japanese language and culture as well as ESL. I passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test N2 and N3. I love Japanese. I play video games, manga, and anime in Japanese, but I am interested in traditional Japanese culture more. My interests in Japan are multitudinous: traditional ceramics, tea ceremony, calligraphy, anime, manga, and modern culture. I studied the former three at length while in Japan.
I have taught adults and children (kindergarten-middle school). I taught through many organizations at public schools while teaching adults in one-on-one English conversation classes. I worked independently as well with companies like Interac, 7act, and Kansai International School.
In my Japanese lessons, I will teach you Japanese in Japanese; however, complicated grammar structures or character study will include English instruction, when necessary. The majority of the class will be in Japanese. In the beginning, rehearsing key cultural daily phrases and situations through role-playing. Next the introduction of the syllabary and reading aforementioned phrases. Introduction of various useful words. After a firm foundation in the concise list of useful words, daily phrases, and the syllabary has been achieved then we will move to grammar work. From that point on using role-playing, projects, quizzes, and games we will progress to more and more difficult material.
English classes will be held very similarly. My classes are customizable. The student can tailor the class to their specific needs.
Designating the Japanese Language Proficiency Test certification as an end goal, I will use the JLPT study materials and GENKI textbooks. I am also flexible and can adapt to whatever materials the student has already procured or enjoys.
I will do my best to be flexible on time. I expect a 24-hour cancellation. Under special cases, cancellations are acceptable within that time frame; however, without a special case I will charge the student percentage of the class fee. Make-up lessons will be arranged at the time of a class cancellation.
Tutoring can take place at the students, home, office, or a cafe or library, decided upon by a student and teacher agreement.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve you academic goals.
Great tutor, easy to work with for scheduling — My 12-year-old daughter just had her first Japanese lesson with Nick and it went really well. He first did an informal assessment to find her level of knowledge with reading, writing, speaking, and understanding the language. He made this activity fun which helped to build rapport. He then began adding to her foundation of knowledge. He recommended some good study materials that we were able to ea ...
