Hello! I am a bibliophile, an interdisciplinarian, an autodidact, an explorer. My interests have always ranged wide, and I am always looking for something new to learn. This persistent interdisciplinary dabbling, coupled with my liberal arts background and practical life experiences, allows me to grasp different ideas quickly, and my linguistic strengths and teaching experience allow me to break down difficult concepts efficiently. My tutoring strengths are in writing (both creative and academic), editing, language arts, reading, English, ESL/ESOL, and the verbal reasoning/reading comprehension sections of the ACT/SAT/GRE.

How I'm qualified, and a few thoughts on the learning process:
I hold a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in applied linguistics. I have several years of experience tutoring university students in academic writing across disciplines. In the past six years, I have instructed elementary and middle school students in conversational English, multi-genre writing, and English through academic content – subjects including science, math, social studies, critical thinking, and language arts – and I have taught professional and conversational English at the university level.

I love learning, and I love collaboration in learning. In broad strokes, I am a constructivist with strong social leanings, meaning I see learning as a process that takes place within the mind of the individual, but the social environment is crucial to this process. Put another way, only the learner can learn, but what is learned and how learning happens depends to a large degree on the people and environment surrounding the learner. As a result, I attempt to make tutoring sessions learner-centric spaces of collaboration with a focus on interaction and negotiation. The tutor’s role is as facilitator and guide, rather than dispenser of information. My goal is to empower learners to see their roles as active, to assist autonomous learners who realize that they are in control of their own growth. I have experience and am comfortable working with students of all ages.

Sundry personal bric-a-brac:
I grew up in rural Ohio, where I completed the first leg of my schooling. I have spent the last six years living and teaching English in Seoul, South Korea. During that time, I completed a master’s degree, and I traveled extensively. I’ve spent time in China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, England, France, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Israel, Egypt, and Jordan. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, dabbling in foreign languages, attempting to teach myself to code, ingesting all types of fiction, and reading non-fiction on topics like language acquisition, cognitive science, philosophy of mind and language, and cognitive psychology.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

For six years, I taught English as a foreign language in Seoul, South Korea. For the majority of my time in Korea, I worked with elementary students, and the curriculum I used was based on teaching English through academic content. My students were assessed not only on their linguistic gains, but on their academic content knowledge as well. As a result, I have several years experience teaching various subjects - including math, science, social studies, and language arts - at an elementary level and from North American textbooks.

Handwriting

I spent several years teaching English to elementary school students in South Korea. Of course, writing always featured in the curriculum, and with young students, in particular, handwriting was an integral part of class early on. Take into account that Korean students approach English with a completely different first language writing system, and the importance of handwriting practice becomes even more apparent. I have helped many young students with their handwriting.

Theatre

I have been involved in theater since high school. I acted in a number of plays in high school, and in university I took a two acting classes and performed in major roles in three main-stage productions - Broadway Bound, Romeo and Juliet, and The Mousetrap - as well as roles in various student productions. As an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, I co-directed an after school English theater club.
