Hi there!

Thank you for your interest in my profile! I am an enthusiastic, energetic and funny tutor who loves children and adult learners. I have been a teacher for 20 years, working in the Richardson and Plano Independent School Districts. I taught first grade for 4 years and then transitioned to being a specialist in reading and language arts. I have been helping students improve their reading, writing, spelling, fluency and vocabulary for over 15 years, meanwhile coaching their teachers.

I am certified to teach 1st through 6th grades, all content areas, as well as ESL. I have completed coursework to teach gifted and talented students. While the bulk of my experience has been with child learners, I've had the pleasure of working with adult learners as well, including living and tutoring in a village in West Africa. I love to learn languages; if I am helping you with your English, know that I'll ask you to teach me a few words in your native language.

I am happy to tutor in your home, in mine, or at a separate location. I have a bright, cheery home with two slightly shy cats. If you're allergic to cats I'll make sure to keep them in a bedroom and make our tutoring space as cat-hair free as possible.

My approach is playful and warm; I love to teach and like my students to have fun! There's no reason we can't work hard, learn and enjoy it at the same time. I like to incorporate technology and kinesthetic movement--using many different pathways into the brain makes sense. If there's a method or technique that helps you learn, I'm happy to use it. I very much prefer my students to keep me posted on what is working well for them. I am very creative; it is not unusual for me to create resources tailored to the needs of particular students.

Thanks again for your interest in my profile. Happy Learning!

Approved subjects

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been an elementary school teacher for the past 20 years. I have written curriculum for Plano ISD and have been videotaped as an example of excellence in teaching. I have been coaching teachers on effective instructional practices for over 10 years, as well as serving struggling students.

Phonics

I have taught phonics within several different programs designed to help students struggling with reading, writing, and spelling. I am well versed in early literacy and the role that phonics plays in it. I am a former reading recovery teacher.
