Hi! My name is Donald, and I love my job! A current Literary Studies major at UTD, I graduated valedictorian from the Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities (TALH) - an early college entrance program at Lamar University - with 68 credit hours. During my stint at TALH, I spent two years helping a pair of political science professors gather and assess data for a research project. Over the course of those same two years, I volunteered as a GED/ESL tutor and taught both leadership and test prep classes to elementary students through a program called LEAP. Several of my literary works were also published in Lamar University's literary magazine, "Pulse," shortly before I transferred to UTD, one of which received the award for best undergraduate form poem. I am a competent tutor in all K-12 subjects, excepting calculus and pre-calculus, and most undergraduate level courses in English and Spanish.
My teaching style focuses primarily on using my students' feedback and learning preferences to create lesson plans that suit them best. It is incredibly flexible, and it has proven especially successful with some of my younger students who often don't get much choice or variety in their education. My second focus is on staying positive and not being afraid to try many, varied approaches to a problem if necessary. I find that this gives my students the opportunity to figure out which approach is easiest for them while also keeping them from getting discouraged. In the end, though, it really doesn't matter what methods I need to use, just as long as everyone is happy and learning.

I am very familiar with students of this age and the material that they need to learn, having volunteered as a tutor at Charlton-Pollard Elementary for two years. Assisted by 2 to 5 of my collegiate peers, I instructed a class of roughly 30 students on leadership development (both historically and in their own lives) for 3 of the 4 semesters I volunteered there. The 4th semester was focused on STAAR test preparation and bringing students who had fallen behind in their classes up to speed. I had great success with both of these endeavors and was told by my students that they really enjoyed teaching style, which focuses primarily on receiving student input to better shape the learning experience to their specific needs.
In high school, I was a Security Council representative in two annually held Model United Nations competitions, both times winning the award for best Security Council representative. I also participated in several TALH academic preview days as a panelist and speaker, answering questions and providing information about the program for parents and potential students. I have acted in both major and minor roles for school drama productions as well, and I even did several public-speaking related UIL events in Junior High, such as CX Debate and Extemporaneous Speaking.
I have completed every level of the TAKS test from K-12 with excellent marks, so I am familiar with its content and the style in which it is given. For a semester, I prepped struggling elementary students for the TAKS's successor, STAAR, through the LEAP program at Charlton-Pollard elementary. The TAKS test is also comprised primarily of subjects for which I have passed the WyzAnt tests, such as History, Algebra, English, and Science.
