Hello my name is Harrison, and I want to be your instructor. I am new to the area however I have a GPS so getting to you will not be an issue.
I believe in full disclosure, and I invite any persons that want to use my services do a background check, call me for references, and make a decision. In all cases your comfort with me is paramount!
I have an undergraduate degree in history from the University of Kansas as well as a Divinity degree from two institutions: St. Paul in Kansas City Missouri and Payne Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio.
In the early 1970's to attain a degree in liberal arts one had to take courses in many disciplines. I had a like of algebra, so I took several courses in this area. This background has afforded teaching opportunities at a community college (Meridian Community College, Meridian Mississippi) in the remedial math department. During my time there I assisted students in attaining the skills to take college algebra. I had a success rate of 80%.
Since then I have utilized that experience in helping students at a boarding school Piney Woods (Jackson, Mississippi where I was given charge to set up remedial studies across the curriculum. I have also taught social studies, history (U.S. and European with an emphasis on English history) biblical studies old and new testament and have worked with such organizations as the Council of Negro Women and the NAACP.
My tutoring philosophy stems from advice to a concert pianist w3ho asked how does one get to Carnegie Hall? The answer: practice, practice, practice! My belief is tutoring works on strengthening a students weaknesses and making them strengths. When working with perspective students their first lesson is: Math is a sentence and when you know what it means you can do any problem. Because of the cumulative nature math presents sessions begin with a review of past lessons, then explanation of the steps leading to solving the problems. This way the student understands what the problem is asking them to solve.
In closing, I am available to have a conversation to answer all inquiries. Again, I your comfort level is paramount. I look forward to an opportunity to teach your children, young adults, and college students.
