You have written a paper to present to a teacher or committee of teachers, or a manuscript to convey a message via a publisher, and you want to know you've done your best.
So you've contacted WyzAnt to find a tutor that can proof your work and show you where it can be better. If there are issues to solve before teachers or publishers see it, you'll receive comments and suggestions in electronic form with your paper that you can accept and use to update your paper. Your tutor can finalize the electronic form of your paper so it can be submitted to your teachers or publishers.
This tutor has spent 18 years working with writers and publishers to help improve case studies, final papers, dissertations, manuscripts -- fiction and nonfiction, magazines, and even textbooks, using MS Word's Reviewing Tab or Toolbar, which includes Track Changes -- which I'll help you use -- and Comments to explain, ask questions, suggest changes, and compliment your message.
He is currently certified in grammar, writing, vocabulary, and proofreading, and looks forward to working with you.
I took Accounting as a senior in college, and then after graduating with a Bachelor's in math, I joined the USAF where I worked in their Accounting Dept. for 4 years. Several years after an honorable discharge, I worked as a bookkeeper in a small typing firm for about 7 months. A few years later, I worked for Arthur Andersen & Co. in their Word Processing department, where we regularly input information for financial statements. I spent 7 years there, until 1989.
For me, accounting led to using word processing software, but not accounting software, except for tax software for filing taxes. I've operated my own editing business for over ten years, filing my own taxes, etc.
First of all, I majored in Math from the 4th Grade through high school. Secondly, I majored in Math in College, where I learned about imaginary numbers, logs, graphs, solving equations and the like, as well as many other courses including differential equations and calculus. Thirdly, I have access to textbooks in this subject because my wife works in the Media & Reserves part of a Library (I would have other access to such books in a public library, if necessary). Finally, because of my experience in teaching writers online and via email, I would also be able to teach students of Algebra 2 or other Math subjects online and via email, with access to similar textbooks they'd be using.
If you have written or compiled sermons, Bible studies, doctrinal studies, papers on Biblical characters, testimonies or memoirs based on particular Bible passages, I have spent over 10 years proofreading many such Bible studies, and can ensure that your writing is accurate, your Scriptures are precise, and your applications are logical.
I can present my findings on a particular manuscript either in person or via email, however the manuscript is presented to me: if in electronic format, or handwritten and needing electronic formatting as well as proofreading.
English is the sum total of grammar, vocabulary, proofreading, and writing--other subjects that I'm certified in. Thus when you break down English into its parts, that's where I'd be proficient in working with other writers of those parts.
I have long-time experience editing works by ESL writers, for whom English is not their first language. Most often, they think in a different language, and when writing, they will transpose words or misuse adjectives and adverbs (as well as punctuation). My method of helping them is to use Track Changes and Comments in MS Word to show how to correctly write and thus speak in English. The Comments are to explain what's right and what's wrong in simple terms that they can understand and duplicate, improving their writing and thus their speech. Also, in the Comments I can question meaning or ask for clarification if they are using local terms that would not be understood by a wider audience.
My desire to help with grammar is to show that I am certified to proofread or copyedit as my way of teaching (tutoring) through your dissertation, term paper, case study or manuscript, what you need to know in terms of grammar as part of the overall experience.
Besides creating MS Access databases with fields like name, address, phone, email, etc. for various personal lists for Christmas cards, I created an MS Access database for a nonprofit school library, in order to put information about books where such information could be easily retrievable. Prior to this, students and teachers would have to physically look at fiction and nonfiction sections of the library by author to find what they needed. They were unable to bring up a catalog that would help them determine what was available.
The access database was readily copied to an MS Excel spreadsheet for purposes of applying P-Touch labels to the books for Dewey Decimal System filing purposes. This project took about 6 months to complete.
My experience therefore qualifies me in the subject matter, although translating that experience to help another person with the basics in an MS Access course depends on how basic that course is, and what the problems are for the particular student.
I like using MS Excel in my business, by creating and using invoices with text boxes, formulas to calculate various rates times numbers of hours, add to subtotals, calculate tax if applicable, etc. I also use it whenever I want to do my year-end taxes including adding up all my deductions, multiplying totals by mileage factors, etc. If I have a mortgage (or any other debt), I can calculate how long it will take me to pay it off if I pay over the minimum each month. I have always loved working with Excel, and I'd be glad to show you how to use it as well, via email or in person.
Microsoft Word is what I use in business to edit other people's work and teach them how to write better, using their own level of grammar, punctuation, word usage, verb-noun agreement, etc., to start from. All my clients submit files via email, and I return results via email. It's also a great writing tool, and can even be used to index a book!
My version of proofreading is not about ensuring that what you wrote matches wherever it came from. What I call "proofreading" includes ensuring that your writing is logical, that your vocabulary (word usage) is correct, that your grammar is appropriate, and that every other aspect of a particular manuscript or dissertation is ready for either publication or submission to a committee of professors, respectively. So it would include basic proofreading, line-by-line copyediting, suggested rewrites and sometimes reorganization or a request for transitions, clarifications, or further updates.
My particular work with "religion" falls under Biblical theology, having continuously studied and read in the Old and New Testaments for over 50 years. I've edited Biblical studies by pastors in London as well as Texas, and also worked with authors of Christian fiction and nonfiction works. I'm currently working with a doctoral candidate at a theological seminary on her dissertation about pastoral depression. I would particularly be interested in helping students with written works in theological studies to check accuracy in Scriptural quotations and applications, as well as any other issues that precede publication.
In my Junior and Senior years of H.S. I scored between 700 and 800 on consecutive SAT Math tests. I was in Honor Math from the 4th Grade, and went on to receive a BA in Math from an accredited college. People studying for the SAT will have a study book that will have sample test questions. My method will include comparing their answers to what the book says are the answers, and explaining how the answers are arrived at. There may be some subjects on the SAT Math test that the student hasn't taken (yet), and a tutor would need to help the student with a preliminary understanding of such subjects.
I have been preparing my own 1040s with various Schedules, including A, C, D and others for many years, ever since I started working for a living from the 60's. I also help a friend do her taxes each year. I use MicroSoft Excel very extensively when I figure out my taxes. I also rely on H&R Block tax software so I won't leave out any details (e.g., taking into consideration all my Sch. C deductions, distribution income, charitable giving, business mileage, medical mileage, etc.). I have a BA in Math, so I enjoy tax time like few others!
My desire to help with vocabulary is to show that I am certified to proofread or copyedit as my way of teaching (tutoring) through your dissertation, term paper, case study or manuscript, what you need to know in terms of vocabulary as part of the overall experience. It's worth noting that vocabulary may be a more difficult area for a writer that didn't learn English as a first language, for in translating another language into English in thought or word, one can often lose meaning or change idioms to make the English more difficult to understand without the help of an editor.
My desire to help with writing is very basic. I am able to proofread or copyedit as my way of teaching (tutoring) through your dissertation, term paper, case study or manuscript, what you need to know in terms of writing as part of the overall experience.
Constructive, Responsive, Available — Paul provided valuable proofreading services to me for a book review. He quickly identified my grammatical writing errors (past and present tense use, transitions from one thought to another, etc.). He helped me better express my thoughts and turn in a much superior paper on a short suspense. I look forward to working with him again. ...
