As a teacher and seasoned instructor, I have taught large groups of students for several years. Although I enjoy the classroom setting, I thrive in the tutoring environment. I love learning how students learn to help me understand how to individualize teaching for each student. Developing a trusting relationship is key when tutoring. My definition of tutoring is creating a question friendly environment, in which, I, as the tutor, ask the students questions to gain an understanding of the specific concepts that challenge the student, and the student asks me questions to gain a deeper understanding of the material. This environment allows the student to feel comfortable to make mistakes and a safe environment for me to help correct the misunderstanding.
I believe in challenging students to excel and reach their full potential. Tutoring is NOT simply giving the right answers (from teacher to student), nor is the primary focus for the student to simply arrive at the correct answer. Tutoring IS establishing a strong understanding of the material by helping the student truly understand the process of HOW to arrive at the correct answer and all the underlying concepts explored through thinking critically.
I have tutored as an undergraduate and graduate students as well as tutoring as a professional. I have had at least six years of experience in private/small group tutoring. As a mathematics instructor I have been had four years of experience in both high school and college classrooms.
I would love to help you understand math on a deeper level. Please let me know how I can help!
Linear Algebra is a field of mathematics that involves vector spaces and matrices are often used when a basis is given. Various operations can be performed on vectors such as vector addition and scalar multiplication. Other concepts often studied include matrix theory, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors.
I have an undergraduate degree in mathematics (40 hours of mathematical content) which included a linear algebra course. Also, I have a graduate degree in mathematics education which included a graduate level course in matrix theory.
Concepts I am competent in (with regards to TAKS) include: functional relationships, properties and attributes of functions, understanding linear function, formulate and use linear equations and inequalities, quadratic and other nonlinear functions, geometric relationships and spatial reasoning, two- and three-dimensional representations of geometric relationships and shapes, measurement and similarity (concepts and uses), percents, proportional relationships, probability, and statistics in application problems, as well as mathematical processes and tools used in problem solving.
As a former high school mathematics instructor and a current college mathematics professor, I am able to relate to high school students in order to effectively educate them on these concepts. It is also important to learn various methods of answering multiple choice questions. It is important to formulate an answer first (as if it were an open ended question) and then use methods to eliminate other answers. Continuous time spent studying these subjects will effectively help to prepare them for the TAKS test, which will eventually be replaced by the STARR test.
I graduated high school with high honors. In college I completed 40 hours of mathematics to obtain a mathematics degree. I also completed 18 hours of graduate mathematics courses in pursuit of a Master degree in Mathematics Education. Therefore, I can effectively help any student prepare for and excel in the TAKS test.
