MY TEACHING STYLE
I create specified plans for companies and individuals/families. I create for your style of learning, but I will push you to achieve as much as you wish to achieve. I have high expectations, but I know that everyone progresses at a different pace. I truly enjoy helping you reach your goals: editing an essay, writing an essay for college, learning Spanish, learning English, preparing for the SAT or ACT, preparing for an interview in your second language and more. I make sure the time we spend in class is effective and organized. There is a specific goal for each lesson, and we will achieve that goal.
ENGLISH / SPANISH
I can take you from your level to fluency: guaranteed if you have consistent classes and do the homework. I am in love with languages and how to learn them effectively. I am constantly trying new ways to develop learning materials with games, activities, listening exercises and worksheets, and I spend my weekends browsing bookstores, websites, and talking to other language teachers about the best ways to teach languages. I live for it. I am currently learning Japanese and French. That being said, I have a very acute knowledge of how languages are best learned or how to help you pass a difficult language class. I make class fun and effective, filled with high energy and zeal. My level of grammar and syntax are at a very high level from over 15 years of learning foreign languages.
I have taught English As A Second Language and Spanish with American Airlines, Samsung, Hitachi, Ferrovial, LBJ Express, ATESVI, and many more.
English Writing and Literature
I have a degree in English Literature from Boston University. I was accepted into a study abroad program in Madrid, Spain, where I studied history and literature in Spanish. I also studied in Guadalajara, Mexico, where I got my English As A Second Language certificate. After that I taught English to children, teens and adults in Campeche, Mexico. I also opened my own English tutoring school in Campeche. Before my career as a teacher began I wrote for the Boston Phoenix newspaper and Stuff at Night Magazine in Boston, Massachusetts. So, I have been a writer and an editor in many respects. I am currently taking a poetry class as well. I know how to write an exciting college essay or paper, as well as check for grammar mistakes. It comes as second nature to me, and I always find the mistakes in New York Times Best Sellers every single week. My eyes are just attuned to finding mistakes, just as much as I am attuned to breathing.
Writing: Essays, Cover Letters, and More
Writing and writing well is an essential part of life, whether you are an engineer, scientist, math major or doctor. It is important to be able to express yourself well through words, explain your side of the story, your argument, and defend yourself intellectually using the correct words and grammar. I can help you write a cover letter, college essay, and more. I will show you how to write an exciting college essay that will catch the eye of the reader or write a cover letter that will grab the attention of the HR department.
SAT/ACT Test Prep: after 25 students, all have improved their ACT/SAT scores, including their essay scores.

I was skeptical at first, because I hadn't ever done an individual tutoring session with anyone before. But Micah has proven to be nothing short of amazing. She's helped me so much in the little time I have been tutoring with her, and breaks lessons down in a way where it's very simple to learn and understand. She's patient with all your questions, and really makes it fun! I can always get in contact with her very easily and she's very dedicated to helping me in any way possible. She has given me great advice. I wouldn't tutor with anyone else. Highly recommend her to all.
I really recommend her since she has a lot of knowledge and experience to teach. She knows how the students learn and keeps them motivated. When I decided to start studying English with tutor, it is not only skill up my English level but also how I can keep to motivate. She is the best match about these things.
Our lesson is mainly along with a textbook. After textbook, we do a workbook as review. It is great memorize and practice for me. Because I can learn more vocabularies and expressions by myself with a workbook. Then, she always helps me when I have some questions. Also she makes me motivated. She gives me great English novels, website and tools (radio etc) to keep me motivated. It is a lot of valuable exercises. I have never bored with our class. I love to learn from her. My English is very improvement and I have a great motivation to study from her.
Micah is a great tutor who cares deeply about her students. She has done wonders for my son.
I like that we spent much of the time actually practicing conversation in Spanish - just listening and then talking back to one another. Even though I still make mistakes it is the way I want to learn more. One thing about Micah that makes it interesting is her energy and her animation! She is a true believer.
I worked with Micah for two and half months and even though it was clear that she possesses a great deal of knowledge about Spanish, her teaching style needs a bit of improvement. At times, Micah can be short and this makes her appear rude. This may not be intentional on her part but this is the way she appears, especially if she is annoyed by a question you ask her and she is not sure of her answer. When I had certain questions, Micah would give answers like "That's just the way it is," or "It's like that in every language." Being an educator myself, I am well aware that these kinds of answers are not acceptable. They are certainly not acceptable if they are not true. I think that Micah is a fair to good instructor. She could be great if she were more patient, considerate, and thoughtful in the answers that she provides to her students. I have made the comments listed here to be helpful to Micah and prospective students who are considering working with her.
I am sorry to hear this Michael. Throughout our tutoring you gave me 4 and 5 stars. We did have a communication issue at the beginning, and I thought we resolved it. The day we had a communication problem, I did not charge you for the lesson, because I want students only to pay for lessons they are satisfied with. I think this is very generous.
If you thought I was not a good fit for you, I wish you had chosen another tutor instead of continuing to be disappointed, while saying nothing to me about it. You had a big challenge ahead of you: learn to translate a document from Spanish to English without taking the 4 semesters of Spanish class that are required. I knew this would be a challenging assignment, but I truly love helping students reach difficult goals. I was trying to help you see the big picture of translation and not focus on so many small details since you only had 2.5 months (less than 20 hours of tutoring!). I would have been happy to give you an etymology lesson, but you hired me to help you pass this test. I know tough love can be difficult, but just as we do not always like our trainers at the gym, we thank them later when we get the results that we want.
Sometimes English students ask me: "Why do some people write comin' instead of coming?" Well, I say, it is a shortened form of the word, and native speakers in many languages cut words off at the end. "But why? Why do English speakers take off the g?" the student asks, exasperated. Sometimes, that's just the way the language is. I have taken language classes in 4 languages, and many of my Japanese, French, and Spanish professors at Boston University have told me, "That's just the way the language is."
With you I was focused on the goal of teaching you how to translate a level 4 Spanish text in 2.5 months, and I felt our time was better spent on other things. My goal was for you to pass the test.
For students looking for a tutor, WyzAnt has a satisfaction guarantee. If you are not happy with your tutor, please do not continue to book this tutor. I urge you to find a fit that is good for you. The goal is happy, effective learning. I also suggest planning well in advance for important tests such at the ACT, SAT, PhD exit Spanish tests, and more.
I am very impressed with Micah's ability to engage my dad in studying English as a Second Language. She is always on time, very patient, and her knowledge of Spanish helped my dad when there was a need (my dad speaks Portuguese) but she always managed to use Spanish only as an emergency. She focuses a lot on pronunciation, which in his case is the most important since he reads and writes fine, but our goal is to make him speak and listen more. We will definitely have Micah teaching my dad more classes in July.
Your dad has been a pleasure to work with. He is so interesting! I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy working with him. Thank you for continuing to work with me as your tutor throughout the summer.
I find her very helpful. She is kind and interacts very well with the student. She provides a good resource for learning. I recommend her for students.
I am from Paris, France, and I came here over a year ago. I am a businessman, but my English was intermediate level. I wanted to improve my pronunciation and my grammar to be able to do business. I hired Micah for 3 hours a week. She was flexible with my busy schedule and seemed to care a lot about my progress. She has a lot of energy, so I was never bored in class! She has even come to my new restaurant to support my business here in the US. I think she is a great tutor who helped me improve tremendously. I recommend her to anyone wanting to improve writing, pronunciation, and casual or business conversations.
Thank you for your time. I studied a lot of new phrases. You are patient with me even when I ask silly questions. I really appreciate your kindness.
You have been a truly amazing student. Your pronunciation and your English expressions have improved each week. You work hard on your grammar and sentence structure, and I know you put a lot of effort in to your job. It has been a pleasure to work with you, and I know we still have 6 more months of lessons ahead of us before you return to Japan. I have also enjoyed helping you prepare your presentations for work. Thank you for choosing me as your English tutor.
Very patient knowledgeable and professional. Took appropriate time with student at convenient time and provided helpful worksheets examples criticism/feedback for improvement. Thanks.
Micah spent some time with our son who is entering 7th grade. It was clear she had taken time to prepare well for the lesson. As she worked with our son, her methods were well thought out and she utilized different tools to trigger his understanding. She uses an exciting tone which kept him engaged. Would highly recommend Micah.
She is patient and gives me motivation to continue learning. She gives me lot of tips in class for me to be able to study on my own outside of class too: for example, websites, books, how to meet others, and CDs. And she has knowledge about learning other languages, so if you are a Japanese, Spanish or French speaker, she understands the challenges from your language to English.
Throughout this last year of tutoring I have seen your English improve exponentially. You have been an amazing student: hard-working, on time, taking my suggestions seriously, and always paying attention and wanting to learn more. You have been wonderful, and I will miss our lessons a lot when you go back to Japan.
Great tutor! I always received a response back when contacting her. Micah tutored my daughter for the exit level Science TAKS test and it was a success. I will definitely use her for SAT tutoring and tips for my younger daughter. She is well worth the money spent!
Micah is very knowledgeable and understands the issues a non-native speaker has. She has a very good assessment process, great study materials and tutoring techniques to support the plan mutually developed with the student from the assessment. She is also very patient and understanding.
She understands work demands and is flexible to set-up alternate times and make-up classes to keep us on track to meet our goals.
We have been working together about 4-months and the results are very good. I have progressed tremendously in my use of English with my colleagues, in phone conversations and in written communications and emails.
I truly feel that Micah is invested in my success and goes the extra mile to ensure we are making progress and utilizing every opportunity.
I am pleased to highly recommend Micah as a 5-STAR English tutor.
We have been very pleased with the tutoring Micah has provided. My son's latest report card reflected the benefits with improved grades in every class. One class went from failing to an A. I would highly recommend Micah. She always praises my son's efforts and has boosted his confidence.
Micah B was very professional and I rely on the grand daughter being tutored who said, "She was a fantastic tutor, by far the best she has ever had!!!"
From day one she had a great curriculum which didn't overwork me but still prepared me very well. She was able to be flexible with me on the scheduling and we could always work something out easily. She always responds to emails and texts asap, as well as being friendly and easy to get along with. I learned a lot and had some fun in the process, I would recommend her to anyone looking for a tutor and if I ever need more tutoring I know who I'll go to. Thanks Micah!
My daughter was very happy working with Micah while preparing for the SAT. Micah was very organized and punctual. She set up a demanding, but doable strategy plan for the 16 hours we booked. She was encouraging and explained the concepts well. We think Micah is an excellent tutor and highly recommend her.
Micah has helped our 14 year old daughter in both Math and English this summer with excellent results. She and my daughter got along right from the beginning. Micah even got her to read a book she needed to complete this summer but absolutely hated till Micah talked to her and got her excited to read it, unbelievable!
I would highly recommend her for any age person needing tutoring.
My two high school students are always thrilled to work with Micah! She keeps them organized and on track without homework and studying being a chore. We are very happy to have found her and I am less stressed about getting homework and school projects done. They are each more confident about their school work.
We are very pleased with the progress our daughter is making with Micah's tutoring support. She is very professional and has provided the focus and strategies that are helping her improve each session.
Thank you Micah for all the study skills you have taught my daughter, as well as, the fantastic geometry help!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Taking tests has always been a forte of mine, and explaining how to pass them has always been another one. I understand how tests like the SAT, ACT, and ASVAB work, and I like sharing the secrets to passing these tests. I cannot wait to work with anyone who really wants to rock the ASVAB and get a great position in the military. This test is extremely important in determining your future with the military, and you don't want to start off on the wrong foot by not preparing. You want to show them that you mean business, and that you are there to work. Start off the right way; I will help you succeed.
With over 4 years of teaching English experience, I know I can help you reach any and all of your English goals. I too have had the experience of learning a second language, so I think this gives me the empathy and patience required when helping students with their goals. I truly look forward to helping you reach your English goals, whether they be simple conversations, college level writing, or understanding those tricky phrasal verbs. Please contact me, and let's get started.
I have been teaching English for over 5 years in Mexico and the US. I am a full time tutor in the subject, so you, my student, are my full time job. I make sure to cover a variety of topics in my lessons: phrasal verbs (to boil down to), idioms (Hold your horses!), slang (What a bummer!), cultural curiosities (You bet!), conversation starters, and more. Even better, the class is customized to what YOU need to learn. Since I've also lived in another country learning a new language, I truly have the patience and empathy needed to successfully assist you with your English goals. I understand the challenges. I will make it fun and interesting too. I also love explaining the 'why's' about your new language.
I have a very specific course for the GED. After taking a GRE course for graduate school, I started designing my own course for the GED, SAT, and ACT. The course covers all areas of the test, and all of my students have raised their scores. I make it fun, while helping you reach your goals.
The ISEE is very similar to the PSAT. I have prepared many students for both tests. With me and a lot of hard work, your child will succeed on this test. I usually allow at least 6 weeks of preparation so there is less stress. Of course, there are always special exceptions. Please let me know if I can help you prepare for this entrance exam.
I have a degree in English literature, and I have worked with children for years, teaching them the patterns of the English language in reading. Sight words and daily reading will quickly give your child the confidence to read more and, most of all, the love of reading.
The SAT Reading Test can be approached in a very logical way. Let me help you conquer this section of the test. Running out of time? Trying to read every line of the passage? Rereading the passage over and over again? Don't let this section make your head swim. Please contact me, and let me help you master this section of the SAT.
I am qualified to teach Spanish, especially here in Dallas, because I have been tutoring here with the Dallas curriculum for the past 4 years. I have lived in both Spain and Mexico studying history and literature in Spanish, so I bring a wide variety of knowledge to my craft. I understand the challenges an English speaker has with Spanish, so I have mastered expertise explanations that clear up any confusion.
The TAKS test was designed in a specific way to teach children how to read actively, learn problem solving techniques, and basically, to learn how to take these types of tests. Texas wants its students prepared for standardized testing, and is attacking this by giving a TAKS test each year until junior year of high school. These tests are logical, and can be passed easily with preparation. They do not necessarily test knowledge, but rather logic. Together, we can get past the stress of these tests. They don't have to be a nightmare each year that strains the child and parents. Let me help you prepare in advance. Don't wait til the last minute!
The TOEFL test wants to make sure that you have an academic and functioning knowledge of the English language. They are going to test every aspect of your language skills. Let me prepare you for this test with my excellent pronunciation practice, grammar drills, writing prompts, and conversation skills. I look forward to helping you conquer this test and move on to reaching your goals.
