I tutored from October of 2012 to June of 2013 through the Lone Star College Academic Success Center. There, I successfully aided students in Algebra, Statistics, Calculus, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, and Physics. I occasionally assisted students with their English and Biology subjects, but my expertise in the physical sciences was more sought-after.
I aim to explain the subject in a way that the student can understand. Not every student thinks in the same way, so I explain the subject in a variety of ways. My approach is to identify the gaps in a student's knowledge and fill those gaps. I don't aim for fun, but we usually laugh along the way. Humor helps to overcome the psychological barriers of learning a new subject.
I ask that students have at hand:
1. The assignment.
2. Their textbook.
3. Supplies necessary to do the assignment. Some assignments require use of a calculator; most require pencil and paper.
I will not do whole assignments for a student, though I often use select parts to demonstrate the necessary problem-solving skills. I am also more than happy to check a student's work. It's a great way to identify areas that need improvement.
I will not help a student while that student is taking a quiz or test online, as that would be considered cheating. It is unethical for me, puts the student at risk of failing if discovered, and does the student no favors in the long run. Success comes to those who are motivated and hard-working. That, too, is one of the lessons I teach.
I look forward to helping you (or your child) meet your goals.
