Algebra 1

This class is a study of the language, concepts, and techniques of Algebra that will prepare students to approach and solve problems following a logical succession of steps. Skills taught in the course lay groundwork for upper level math and science courses and have practical uses. Algebra I is offered 8th through 12th grade. The majority of students take Algebra I as 9th graders.

Elementary Math

3rd Grade: This course focuses on the use of mathematics in real-life situations. Social studies and science connections are stressed. Students will be given an opportunity to master basic concepts related to numbers and skills in applying those concepts to solving basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. They will also study fractions, measurements, volume, mass, time, area, graphing, and interactions with money.

4th Grade: This course is a balanced, integrated mathematics program that includes continual development of whole number concepts, whole number computation, mental math, problem solving, patterns, functions, measurement, geometry, fractions, decimals, statistics, and probability. Word problems are incrementally developed and continually practiced throughout the year.

5th Grade: This course will provide students with practice in solving word problems and using fractions and decimals, as well as arithmetic. It will also provide students with the opportunity to master the foundational skills and concepts of mathematics. The student will also be exposed to working with percentages, basic geometry, the number line, and negative numbers.

6th Grade: In this course, students learn math is important to real life, science, and most every area of study while concepts are incrementally developed and practiced throughout the year. Concepts include decimal numbers and money, fractions, graphs, linear measure, area, perimeter, volume, percent, ratio, unit conversion, probability, exponents, angle measurements, coordinates, and integers.

This course reinforces mathematical skills taught in the grade six class with additional advanced computation including an emphasis on Algebraic concepts. Students study fractions, decimals, percents, positive and negative integers and rational numbers. They become more proficient in using ratios, proportions and solving algebraic equations. Students will develop and expand problem solving skills (creatively and analytically) in order to solve word problems. Students continue to practice using math skills to solve word problems and to think creatively and analytically. Students will use manipulatives and calculators. Successful completion of this course prepares students for success in Algebra 1.
