I have a B.S. in pharmacy from the University of Montana and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Washington. I spent most of my academic career at the University of Utah where I taught organic chemistry, biochemisty and nutrition to pharmacy and graduate students in addition to holding several administrative positions.

Although I am now retired, during my academic career I received numerous teaching awards and was named university professor for my efforts in this area. I have been told that I can explain difficult concepts well, and in so doing I try to frame answers to questions in more than one way, until the light goes on and the student understands.

Chemistry

I have a B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Montana and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Washington. I spent most of my academic career at the University of Utah where I taught organic chemistry, biochemisty and nutrition to pharmacy and graduate students in addition to holding several administrative positions.

Although I am now retired, during my academic career I received numerous teaching awards and was named university professor for my efforts in this area. I have been told that I can explain difficult concepts well, and in so doing I try to frame answers to questions in more than one way, until the light goes on and the student understands.

Organic Chemistry

I am a retired University professor with a Ph.D. in organic medicinal chemistry. I taught this subject as well as biochemistry and nutrition for many years to pharmacy and graduate students.

In my teaching I stress that the student learn concepts rather than emphasizing memorization of unrelated facts. I believe that once a student learns a concept in organic chemistry that he/she can apply the concept to solving a variety of problems.

Pharmacology

I am a retired university professor who taught pharmacy students for over 30 years. My Ph.D. degree is in medicinal chemistry which overlaps substantially with pharmacology.

Although pharmacology is largely the science of how drugs act in the body, understanding the chemistry of the drug allows one to predict what the action of the drug will be. That is, the chemistry of a drug and its action in the body are parallel topics--if the student understands the chemistry, he/she can better predict the drug action, and conversely if the student understands the mechanism of drug action, he/she can better understand the chemistry.

In my teaching I try to emphasize mastery of concepts rather than rote memorization, although in all science some of the latter is required.
