In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am studying to become a Speech Pathologist, and part of my scope of practice will include working with kids with Autism. I will be a senior in my field in the fall, and I have learned about Autism in several of my classes through the OU Health Sciences Center. We learned about some good methods to use when working with kids with Autism, including use of transitions, giving time for them to process their expressive language, and working with them in social situations that may be difficult for them.
In my studies, I have researched Autism with a professor who specializes in helping children with Autism, and I have learned much from her on how to modify teaching to fit the needs of the child on a practical level. She studies eye-gaze patterns with children with Autism as her research, and she works with children with Autism in the language preschool at the College of Allied Health. In the fall, I will work with a family with a child with Autism to work on his social language. My work will include exposing him to social situations and teaching him to process and use expressive language on a daily basis.
I am a junior at the University of Oklahoma, and my major is Communication Sciences and Disorders. I have a 4.0 and I maintained all A's throughout a private college prep high school. In order to maintain these standards, I have had to learn to study through organizing my notes, following directions carefully, and learning different methods of studying, including making schedules, picking important information, and studying every day. My professional training includes class time in my major that has focused on study skills as well as past tutoring experience in which I have trained students on how to study.
