Although I am not by any means a grandmaster, I have been playing chess for over forty years. I have beaten several players who rank in the 1800-1999 range, which would place me as below an expert in the "Class A" range. I am familiar with many of the chess opening styles and the strategic theories for game development. I've learned that developing a personal chess style involves learning both the mechanics of the game as well as the psychological factors that influence play.
My PhD dissertation was on the genetics of the Neurospora circadian clock. This led to the publication of two papers in the journal Genetics and a follow-up review of clock genetics in the Philosophical Transaction of the Royal Society of London. I have subsequently published two more papers in genetics journals.
