American History

I have loved American history throughout my life. Even as a teacher I managed to teach history to my students despite the general prohibition not to because it wasn't one of the tested subjects. How did I pull this off? I used reading strategies to teach history lessons. Also, I found that the most engaging way to teach history was doing it in a story form. This allowed the history to come to life for my students and not just memorizing a set of dull dates and facts.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have created numerous PowerPoints throughout the years for my graduate classes. Additionally, I was constantly creating PowerPoints for my own students to help them become engaged learners. While I don't know all the ins and outs of PowerPoint, not only do I know the basics, I know a lot of the bells and whistles and can teach them to you as well.

Reading

As a teacher I was in charge of the most at-risk students in the area of reading and given the task of helping them acquire the skills they were lacking. I had one student that I was able to take from a pre-primer reading level all the way to 4th grade reading level in one academic year (he was a 5th grader). Geography

I established two different geography clubs that competed in the National Geography Bee at the district level. I have traveled to several countries. Couple that with a love for other people, cultures, and history, and I can bring geography to life.

Elementary Math

I was a former Math Department chair, a math consultant with Region 10 Educational Service Center (covers south Dallas County, Dallas, to the Red River and a portion of East Texas, have given many seminars at the state Math conference for Teachers, and was a very successful Math tutor. I love analyzing the breakdown in learning that has occurred for a student and devising personalized ways to help them learn the concepts.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified K-6th grade teacher in the state of Texas having completed 12 years of education in public schools. I have taught 4th, 5th, and 6th graders during that time and have worked with students from Kindergarten through 6th grade.

Study Skills

As a Texas educator for the past 12 years, I have been giving many students who have struggled in school. Why? Because I was able to assist them with their difficulties. Oftentimes, this involved assisting them to learn simple study skills, time management skills, organizational skills. This made all the difference and helped them become successful.

Religion

I have 2 graduate degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary. I have completed a 4 year theological studies program---one in Christian Education, the other in Biblical Studies.

Social Studies

I have loved social studies from a young age. I love learning about other countries, other cultures, other people, about the government, economics, civics, etc. I have been able to translate that passion into being a great story teller to make history come to life for my students. I have had them beg me to teach social studies and most would tell me they couldn't believe that social studies could be fun. They thought it was dull, boring, and dead.
