I have a B.S. in Studio Arts, am a Torrey Honors Institute Graduate and am beginning the University of Dallas' Master in Humanities program this summer. I have had frequent experience working with homeschool families, and six years of Public Speaking and Competitive Speech and Debate experience at the high school and collegiate level. Whether your student wants to improve critical thinking, communication, writing, reading comprehension skills, or something with more of an arts focus, I am eager to assist. I have had three years of experience in tutoring, classroom teaching, and coaching for a variety of subjects and age-groups. Working one-on-one is one of the most rewarding and worthwhile pursuits because it offers an opportunity to invest in uniquely gifted individuals in a manner best suited to each student. While teaching, I engage students in Socratic-style discussion in order to promote individual learning and critical thinking. I am able to tutor observational drawing, sketching, oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting, assemblage sculpture, machine sewing, art history, Western civ., classics, British lit, world history, public speaking, and various styles of debate. I also have an extensive background in Classical ballet and performing arts. If interested or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks! - Amy

Art History

Biola University: West. Art History I & II, Modernity, Contemporary Art Trends and Art and the Bible. I enjoy Art History particularly as it relates to the development of cultural practices and ideology. I plan to continue my study of this subject on the graduate level.

I have 12 years classical ballet training primarily in the R.A.D. method and passed the Royal Academy of Dance Intermediate Vocational Graded Examination with Distinction in 2004. My ballet training involved 4 years of pointe experience and included many performances en pointe as well. While growing up, I danced in the Miami City Ballet's version of The Nutcracker for 6 years (1999-2004) including the lead role of Marie. This past year, I assisted with weekly Nutcracker rehearsals, costuming and performances. Over the years, I have organized, choreographed and directed many dances for community and church events. My dancing experience spans the last 15 years and includes styles such as swing, Jewish, interpretive, lyrical, and historic forms of dancing.

Bible Studies

I have been a committed Christian throughout my life and enjoy Biblical studies, Theology and Apologetics. I completed 23 Bible units at Biola University, attended 3 sessions of Summit Ministries Worldview camps, and competed in NCFCA's competitive Apologetics event 3 years in high school. I taught various Worldview classes and workshops.

In high school I completed 4 years of a Great Books curriculum before graduation which gave me a foundation for the more intense Torrey Honors Institute Great Books Program which I completed at Biola University. The Torrey program required 60 units of original source readings in the foundational literature of Western civilization.

In general, I am familiar with Ancient Greek, Roman, Early Church, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Modern classics. Specifically, I am very familiar with many Platonic Dialogues, Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, The Illiad, The Odyssey, The Aeneid, Agustine's Confessions, The Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost, Descartes' Meditations, Locke's II Treatise on Government, and many classics that are considered British Literature such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre and others.

My bachelor's degree is in Studio Art. During my undergrad studies, I took Drawing I & II, Figure Studies I and II and Illustration I at Biola University. I have experience tutoring observational drawing and enjoy teaching the technical as well as creative aspects of drawing. I have been taking art lessons since I was 5 and have loved it ever since.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience teaching K-6 students in specialized areas including art, public speaking and world history. I instructed a world history course as well as a communications course [grades 5-8] for a year for a private educational institution. I have additional experience tutoring students in fundamental areas such as reading, science and composition.

I completed Great Books honors programs in high school and college that focused on reading, discussing and writing about literature central to the development of Western civilization. Currently, I tutor several students in English and am pursuing a masters in Humanities degree with a concentration in Literature.

European History

My interest in European History centers around its Classical, Medieval and Renaissance development, particularly in the realms of Art, Literature, Theology and Philosophy.

Literature is by far my favorite academic subject. Both my high school and collegiate honors programs had a reading-oriented educational process complemented by group discussions and written responses. I am familiar with most of the Great Books of Western Civilization as well as many British lit. and modern classics.

I have taken Painting I and II and Color Theory I. I have experience in Oil, Acrylic and Watercolor mediums. I enjoy working in all mediums and have a working knowledge of color theory and composition.

Public Speaking

I have 3 years of experience in high school competitive speech events as well as 3 years of collegiate debate experience. Competitively, I have experience in Persuasive, Oratory, Impromptu, Dramatic interpretation, DUO interpretation, Apologetics and Extemporaneous speaking as well as Parliamentary, Policy and Value styles of debate. I completed two communications internships with teaching/coaching components as well as 1 year of teaching public speaking classes and 2 years of coaching a H.S. debate team. Since graduation, I have had several opportunities for public speaking in the community and for organizations.

Having completed Great Books courses in both high school and college, I am specifically familiar with literary traditions of Western history and culture. My own love of reading inspires me to help others develop the skills necessary to read well and learn to appreciate the opportunities afforded by reading.
I have experience teaching high school literature, leading book discussions and using Socratic-style questions in order to encourage reading comprehension, critical thinking, and the imagination.

I have 10 years of experience. I completed sewing projects through 4-h for 6 years growing up and have continued to sew since that point. My experience primarily relates to simple clothing, household items (curtains, pillows, etc.) and costuming including fantasy (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc.) and Civil war period clothing. I have experience teaching groups and individuals in hand and machine sewing.

World History

My background in World History has been supported by my studies of Art History as well as Great Books studies. I have experience tutoring as well as a year of experience teaching both middle and high school World History. My preferred period of study includes Ancient - Renaissance History.

Wonderful Debate Tutor! Amy tutored my daughter in debate and I could not have been happier with her as a tutor. My daughter had no experience in debate and Amy was very patient and supportive of her. She offered creative ways for my daughter to practice and helped build her confidence. I would definitely recommend Amy as a tutor and will hire her again in the future! ...
